The Garden District in New Orleans
Today I’m continuing my series of write ups on New Orleans. What we’ll be covering today is The Garden District. The Garden District is Home to famed restaurants, quite bars, stunning mansions and a beautiful cemetery. For any tourist, especially architectural curious ones, The Garden District is a must see!
The first thing one notices when entering The Garden District are the still occupied ornate mansions. The mansions mostly built in the 1800s mix the ornate styles of old, with perfectly crafted wrought iron fences and a touch of modern convenience. Given their proximity and beauty making one of these your home will likely run you a cool but luckily just taking it all in is free!
After a walk around the neighbourhood I’d recommend heading down to Lafayette Cemetery. Due to the groundwater being so high bodies can’t be buried below ground and are instead put in above ground crypts. It makes for a spooky site but it’s better than the dead rising with every flood. In addition to this Lafayette Cemetery is host to a number of famed locals and voodoo practitioners. Go early though as the cemetery closes early to keep the ghouls and ghosts at bay.
Finally once you’ve seen enough sites and had your fill of architecture I’d recommend a trip to one of the areas famed restaurants or bars. Unlike The French Quarter bars and eateries here are located on calm quite streets perfect for a relaxed evening out. If you’re unsure where to go I’d recommend Commander’s Palace(show above).
