40 Mile Point Lighthouse & A Shipwreck (sort of)

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

While it was still 100+ degrees out, we decided to take a break from the beach. We jumped in the car and headed north up the coast. Not to far into the drive we came across a sign with an arrow that said "Lighthouse". That's all it took and away we went.

As you pull down the long drive it tells you to tune your radio to 107.3 FM. When you do, it starts a story on the history of the buildings, lighthouse and shipwreck. We didn't listen to the whole thing but for the 10min we did, it was very interesting and informative.

Once we pulled around the corner the water came into view and you could see the lighthouse in the distance.

Most of the buildings were closed as it was late in the day, but you could tour the grounds. We walked around the lighthouse and saw another sign that said "Shipwreck". It took you along a winding sand path, lined with Jack Pine trees. As we made our way down the path, it had some signs explaining what happened to the ship and it's location.

As the trees opened up to the beach, this was my view.

We walked up and down the beach and didn't see anything resembling a shipwreck. During the daytime they have a free guided tour which would have probably helped us spot it.

A little further down the beach was another path that lead up to some ship memorials. One was the SS Calcite Pilot house and the other was a life boat that had been restored.

SS Calcite Pilot House

The SS Calcite was built in 1912 and was the largest self unloading vessel in the world. It was 436ft long and was able to haul 7000 tons of Limestone from the quarry in Rogers City. The ship was in service for 49yrs until being retired in 1961 for being to small. During her lifetime she hauled 25 million tons of Limestone and 6.5 million tons of coal.

This was a cool little piece that was restored and donated to the park by some local people.

I'm trying to keep this short because I still have to show you the Ocqueoc Waterfalls and some videos I took. I hope you enjoyed this part of my mini trip, more to come soon.

That's a bummer you weren't able to find the shipwreck, but you saw that lighthouse. They can be fun to go up in, but also can be scary. It depends on a lot of factors.

The beach was gorgeous! Did you go wading or swimming?

I'm sure we'll be back up there. We're looking at properties in that general vicinity. And of course we got in the water, it was 100 degrees outside. 😁

It looks like beautiful country, so seems like you can't go wrong. Are you looking at moving there or getting a vacation property?

And of course we got in the water, it was 100 degrees outside.

Nice! There are a surprising number of people that still won't go in if the water isn't bathtub temp or warmer.

We are looking at cabins on the water to move to for retirement. Only 1 kid left at home and he graduates next year. 🤘 If the water isn't frozen over, count me in. Lol

Sounds lovely! It's good to plan ahead and if you have a spot that you like, why not go for it?

I'm not quite that bold, but I used to get in glacier water all the time. Not as much anymore. :)

I must be fun doing the local spots, despite the hot temperatures. It is interesting that many things, like SS Calcite which was the largest self-unloading vessel in the world during its time, are no considered too small, then there are other things, like the first computer which was super large, is now obsolete because it was too massive. Thanks for sharing your day, my friend! Keep cool!

Thanks @silversaver888. I enjoy the heat. It is crazy how things become obsolete because of there usecase. Thanks for checking it out, I'll have more up soon.

It sure has been hot these last few days! At least you were along the water and got to see some history. It sounds like it was a fun trip.

It has been really hot. I'm not complaining, winter is around the corner.

I am loving this trip with you. Beautiful places, historical facts and a very well written story. Thumbs UP!

Happy you like it @ronaldoavelino. It's been a great summer so far. Don't you guys have some of the world's most beautiful beaches down there?

Yes, Brazilian beaches are known for their white sands, warm (not so cool) water and beautiful half-naked (to American standards) girls..I liked yours because it is not salt water.
