Galata Tower

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

Galata Tower is one of the famous-historical touristic place of Istanbul together with Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Rumeli & Anatolian Fortress, Maiden’s Tower, Golden Horn, Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace. It was first built by Bizans Emporer Anastasius Oilosuz. After having been destroyed by a huge fire, it was rebuit by Genoese in 14th century. I saw the similar buildings in Genova. In 1453 Fatih Sultan Mehmet conquered Istanbul (Constantinopolis then), thenceforth Galata Tower has been used by Ottomans & Turks.

Galata Tower is located at the centre of medieval city and easy to reach after crossing Galata Bridge towards Karaköy Side. You just need to walk up the hill from Karaköy. If you don’t want to walk, you can use historical Tunnel. There are always people in line waiting to climb up to the top of Galata Tower. Entrance fee is about 4 Euros in 2019.

Galata Tower is also at the end of the most known Istiklal Street. It would be a good walking tour through the crowded, long street till Taksim Square.

That is such a pretty tower! I remember seeing it in the distance, at night, in your photo of the bridge and had no idea it would be so unique and lovely by daylight! I like the old brick and the rounded archways over the windows! It was interesting to read the history, too, how it was destroyed and rebuilt, and such an old tower, too! Thanks for showing us this remarkable landmark! 😃

You are welcome 😀 How could you notice it on the other photo? Bravo!

I noticed it because it was higher than anything else and had lights shining on it! 😉

@videoaddiction,

I have to share this with you:

They called the tower as "Christea Turris", or "Tower of Christ".

My first thought was the Tower Of Babel from the Bible Source... what an awesome land mark, and even cooler that you can actually visit!! Tell me... I am curious; have you ever traveled in these tunnels you speak of? I can remember when I was in Germany in the Army... there were miles of tunnels under-ground, a lot of this was due to the use of old boiler systems, for heat and water, etcetera.. but is was crazy, seeing what I felt was like an "underground City"... file cabinets, desks, calendars on the wall. Anyway... keep up the good work... engage with us more!! Tell us more about the awesome YOU!!

Wes

This tunnel is funicular line, it is the second oldest metro of world, which was built in Ottoman times for commercial aim. Not kind of tunnel that was used in wars.

...oldest metro of world...

That is a fascinating thing to learn!

@videoaddiction,

Well... interesting none the less... certainly something to make you think about, as we are so busy in current times, wanting that new phone or car... the mindset of what the past included, with these beautiful structures is amazing... don't you think?

I agree with you. Simple but good mindset..
