El claustro de los monjes olvidados // The cloister of forgotten monks

He visto muchos claustros. Siempre me han atraído por su carácter íntimo y recogido.

El claustro de un monasterio era el recinto cuadrado donde los monjes oraban, paseaban y hacían meditación. Siempre en ellos se siente paz. Los de estilo románico me apasionan y muchos se ven al recorrer el Camino de Santiago.

El Claustro Grande del Monasterio de San Martino ( Certosa di San Martino) me impresionó también aunque por otro motivo.

Es de estilo renacentista, del siglo XVI y cuenta con 64 columnas de mármol blanco. En el centro hay un pozo decorado y en una de las esquinas del patio hay un pequeño cementerio, la fosa común de los monjes. No hay lápidas. Nada se sabe de las personas cuyos restos están allí. Únicamente una decoración tétrica con calaveras nos recuerda nuestra triste condición de mortales.

La Certosa di San Martino es un monasterio que está protegido junto al castello de Sant’Elmo, en la parte mas alta de Nápoles y por tanto disfruta de unas vistas magnífica sobre el golfo de Nápoles

Solamente por las vistas inigualables, valdría la pena llegar hasta arriba. Estas vistas espléndidas solo superadas por las que se obtienen desde las murallas del castillo. Los monjes disfrutaban de estas vistas panorámicas espectaculares desde sus celdas y habitaciones.

El Monasterio está actualmente en periodo de restauración y, por el momento, está poco explicado y señalizado. Nosotros, por ejemplo, encontramos por casualidad el acceso a la iglesia y la sacristía que son maravillosas.

Tras subir una escalera pequeña, desde el claustro, pudimos admirar estas joyas incomparables que son un auténtico catálogo del barroco napolitano. Me admiró mucho la profusión de mármoles de diversos colores que decoran paredes y suelos con hermosos dibujos.

El templo es extraordinario, pero el monasterio también alberga un magnífica colección belenes que fue motivo de otro post.

Los monjes cartujos eran unos grandes coleccionistas. En los siglos XVI y XVII agruparon una gran cantidad de obras de artistas. En la sacristía hay un Rivera fabuloso. Muy meticulosos en la construcción y decoración de su templo que contrasta con el cementerio raso, deslucido y anónimo.

Una pequeña balaustrada de mármol blanco decorada con calaveras es lo único que separa el patio de la fosa común. Aquí yacen monjes olvidados. La muerte es el olvido

I have seen many cloisters. I have always been attracted by his intimate and collected nature. The cloister of a monastery was the square enclosure where the monks prayed, walked and did meditation. Peace is always felt in them. Those of Romanesque style fascinate me and many are seen when traveling the Camino de Santiago.

The Big Cloister of Monastery of San Martino (Certosa di San Martino) impressed me also though for another reason.

It is in the Renaissance style, from the 16th century and has 64 white marble columns. In the center there is a well decorated and in one of the corners of the courtyard there is a small cemetery, the common grave of the monks. There are no tombstones. Nothing is known about the people whose remains are there. Only a gloomy decoration with skulls reminds us of our sad condition as mortals.

The Certosa di San Martino is a monastery that is protected next to the castello of Sant'Elmo, in the highest part of Naples and therefore enjoys magnificent views over the Gulf of Naples
Only for the unparalleled views, it would be worth it to get to the top. These splendid views only surpassed by those obtained from the castle walls. The monks enjoyed these spectacular panoramic views from their cells and rooms.

The Monastery is currently in a period of restoration and, for the moment, is little explained and signposted. We, for example, find by chance the access to the church and the sacristy that are wonderful.

After climbing a small staircase, from the cloister, we could admire these incomparable jewels that are an authentic catalog of Neapolitan baroque. I admired the profusion of marbles of different colors that decorate walls and floors with beautiful drawings.

The temple is extraordinary, but the monastery also houses a magnificent Nativity scene collection that was the subject of another post.
The Carthusian monks were great collectors. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries grouped a large number of works of artists. In the sacristy there is a fabulous Rivera. Very meticulous in the construction and decoration of his temple that contrasts with the plain cemetery, lackluster and anonymous.

A small white marble balustrade decorated with skulls is the only thing that separates the courtyard from the common grave. Here lie forgotten monks. Death is oblivion
