Do you make a test drive?

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Will you make a test drive before you buy a car or will you simply buy it via the internet just because of the pictures showed? The car I just made a testdrive with was picked out by @VampireMeerkat.

I drove a Renault Clio 1.2 (build 1999) for about 1600 kilometers to test it.

It took me 19 hours nearly non-stop driving. I just stopped at the gasstations en twice for a nap of 45 and 60 minutes.

The car looks great and... small.

I feel a bit concerned about the front and driving bad landrpads. The Renault is not a car I would buy or try easily. The inside is bigger as expected. I fit in. Plenty of room for my long legs and my children sit comfortable as well. The car is less luxury as my Mazda 626 (also build in 1999).

Germany has hills so it is a great country to try this little car.

Gas is cheaper there as well. The hills in Germany are no problem for this little car. Since Germany still has (since 12 years or longer) many roadworks I meet all kind of situations where I can try out this little one (accidents included). Because of the many road works over 700 kilometers the average speed was only 80 kilometers.

Do small cars use less fuel?

It felt as if this little car used more gas as my Mazda 626 did. But after the drive I found out that both used the same (1:17.5 not bad at all).
The Mazda drove with 15" winter tires and the Renault with 14" (summer) tires.
The Mazda drove the biggest part of the distance 80 kilometres an hour, the Renailt also drove some parts 100, 120 and 140. The faster I drove the more gas it used!

It might look small but there is plenty of space in it.

Not only for us but also for one dog in the "trunk" and lots of shoppings.

Some problems showed up

as I first drove the car. A strange noise was heard as the gas pedal was pressed and hold at a certain point. The doors did not open and close with the key and it is very hard to get the gear in 1.
After the ling drive most of it was over, except for the gear once in a while (as I just drove it the gear was the biggest problem).

If you look for a smaller car take this one.

If it comes ro roadtax I will save ca 50%. The insurance will be cheaper as well. The engine/motor is silent and sitting in it will not give you the feeling of sitting in a sardine can at all.
