10 websites to buy cheap airline tickets!

One of the most important costs we have to face at the time of a trip to distant lands, is undoubtedly the air ticket. We can see much of our budget evaporate as if nothing at the time of booking!
Many times due to lack of knowledge, we make purchases on websites that generate extra charges, which do not always offer the cheapest flights or that simply do not operate with the low cost airlines. For this reason, in Time of Backpacks we will present a list of portals and websites, which according to our experience are the best to travel cheap and not waste our money.

Before starting some points to consider:
The best days to travel: There are many theories on which days are the cheapest to travel.
Many believe that Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are usually the cheapest, while Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive. In part we can say that this has some logic. Fridays tend to be more expensive, since many people leave for the weekend or start their vacations that day. Something similar happens with Sundays, since many return to their jobs on Monday.
But the reality is that the key lies in flexibility. The possibility of being able to play with the search tool of the sites, explore, find last minute offers or have the freedom to check flights in the whole month, gives us the most options to get a truly economic flight:

Price alerts: It's very, very, very good! It's important to learn how to set up alerts for websites. Unfortunately we can not all be 100% of the time in a PC or with the cell phone looking for flights, and often the good flights appear surprisingly and are completed in a very short time. For this reason, it is important to configure the alerts of the portals in order to be attentive to air tickets really convenient!

Stopover: One of the modalities that we like the most in Backpack Time!
We used it on our last trip to Europe and we were really fascinated.
These prolonged, mostly subsidized stopovers give us the possibility to stay two, three or even seven days in the city where we make the transfer, and in this way to know a new city at the same cost of the initial passage (In some cases they are even cheaper )
You can read our post about Stopover in this link.

Avoid travel agencies: Many online travel agencies are shown as search engines or flight search engines, but in reality they are undercover agencies.
Portals such as Despegar or Almundo, only increase the costs of the ticket and show airline flights with which they have an agreement, ignoring many others, especially low cost airlines.
This does not mean that these portals can not be used, even we have used them, especially for the possibility of paying in installments without interest or promos with credit cards, but it is very important to do intensive searches before buying by this means, and be sure that the passage does not have a large surcharge.

Round trip tickets: In many cases, although our itinerary tells us that you only need to take a ticket from IDA, it is highly recommended to carry out the searches with the option IDA / VUELTA marked.
We can be surprised to see the difference in costs. For the airline it is more convenient to sell the round trip flight, it facilitates the planning of the flights and in this way they avoid that the return is acquired in another airline.

1- Air promotions
Our header page, Promotions Areas is a blog that publishes daily and recommends passages at a very good price. The administrators are dedicated to search and investigate multiple airline tickets at low prices.
The positive thing is that the transaction is made on the airline's website, the blog does not manage, nor does it manage money.
On the other hand, the negative point is that the offers that are published are up, you never know what they will publish or to what destinations. They also tend to last very little, which is why alarms are essential when buying a trip!

2- Skyscanner
Undoubtedly one of the most recommended websites by the traveler and backpacker community!
Skyscanner is a meta-search engine that will buy prices from different airlines and search engines simultaneously. This site, by covering not only airlines but also other search engines, generates a really significant time saving! They do not charge commissions or additional charges, so the prices are the same as they are in the original pages. On the other hand, we emphasize again the fact that the payments are made directly with the airline.

3- Kayak
Kayak is a flight search engine that explores in more than 100 simultaneous pages, searching for the best price in flights, hotels and packages!
Currently it is one of the most popular tools, the most recommended and consulted by travelers from around the world! It is an almost mandatory meta-search engine for our travel organization. It is super complete since handles 30 languages and 40 different types of currencies. Although always going to assign us to the page of each company / airline since it does not handle payment system.

4- Google flights
The internet giant could not be left behind in this traveling traveler!
Since very recently, it is available for Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru, this incredible tool allows you to buy flights, compare prices and book tickets!
We have not yet officially used it, but we are sure that Google Flights (google flights) will become one of our main allies in the future.

5- eDreams
Unlike several of the previous portals, eDreams is an online travel agency and not a search engine. This means that when looking for a flight, they scan only the airlines with which they operate and not a full search. Anyway, this mode does not make them a bad place to look for flights, they usually offer offers, promotions, discounts and exclusive packages that make it a good option to travel at low cost.
Among its negative points, we highlight that we have detected many claims with duplicate charges through its payment gateway, since in eDreams the payment itself is made through them and not from the airline.

6- easyjet
If you are in Europe and want to travel, meet and enjoy other cities of the continent Easyjet is the website for you! Without fear of making mistakes, we can say that we are facing one of the most used and economic airlines to fly within Europe. Since its origins Easyjet is weighing as a low cost flight operator. When you travel with them do not expect personalized attention, food, drinks, or anything like that. This airline is focused on lowering the costs so that the trips are really cheap!
We emphasize that it also makes flights between Europe and North Africa.
The negative: Very attentive with charges for excess baggage, weight, etc!

Other lowcost: Ryanair // WizzAir // Flybondi

7- Liligo
This particular search engine, not only compares flights, but also searches for buses, trains and carpooling. Ideal for investigating travel alternatives and routes in Europe!
In the searches that we do, we have found good prices to travel between cities at close range, such as Paris-London.

8- Volotea
Like Easyjet, Volotea is a low cost airline operating in Europe. In this case, they are specialized in cities or small towns, avoiding unnecessary stopovers and becoming an ideal ally for travelers in search of more autochthonous experiences who want to escape from the big European cities.

9- Turismocity
Turismocity is a price comparison of flights and hotels that allows you to know in a single search the cheapest price for the date and destination. When a search is made, the site collates the available prices from thousands of agencies and airlines with the best results. There is also the possibility of seeing the function +/- 3 days, in order to compare prices with other dates.
Another facility granted by Turismocity to its users is that it sends chrome alerts, notifications by the App (available on iOS and Android) and has the option to configure customized alerts with specific dates and destinations.

10- Expedia
It works as an online travel agency, Expedia offers packages, tickets and cruises at good prices and with some promotions and discounts that will make us doubt whether to buy our tickets directly on the airlines or through its portal!
As we said before, we have nothing against online agencies, we have even used them. But before any transaction, we always recommend checking on the airline's page and confirming that the price is similar and / or that Expedia promotions are really convenient.
Many times with plans of 12 or 18 installments without interest, you can face a reload in the price through an agency, but contemplating that the value of the installments will be absorbed by the inflation of each country!

Other recommended places to look for cheap flights:
Lastminute

Mobissimo

easyviajar

Trabber

From Tiempo de Mochilas we have created this list based on our experience and that of friendly travelers. We do not have a favorite portal, we believe that the search, comparing and not staying anchored in a single portal, are the basis to find the best opportunity and thus travel cheap! We really hope that this info will be helpful and useful!
