Wandering Ovation Of The Seas Part 1: Top Tips For Sail Away

Why Do it? Have some fun on the high seas
Is it Any Good? Yes!
I used to hate the idea of a cruise ship holiday, nothing sounded worse to me. Suck on a floating old peoples home with bad food and sea sickness was how I imagined it. So it was rather begrudgingly that I agreed to go on one several years ago. Wasn't I wrong - about all of it! So cruise journeys are now a regular part of my travel plans. And this one is a beaut!
P&O have dominated the Australian cruise holiday market for years (and they still do), but there are new(ish) kids on the block and they know how to have fun. Don't get me wrong, P&O are great - it's just that some of these new options are outstanding.
The biggest cruise ship coming to Australia right now is Ovation of the Seas. It sails from Sydney for most of the Southern Hemisphere summer months and into Autumn. It's part of the Royal Caribbean family who basically build floating luxury resort hotels, not ships!
I'll get into some of the fun you can have onboard in another post, but lets just say that in 10 days on board I couldn't do everything that was on offer. I'll also leave how to choose and book a cruise to others who spend much more time on those sorts of things than me!
So let's jump right into the cruise, what the heck do you do once you get on board? Well, here are my top tips for a sail away (as they tell me it's known) from Sydney harbor.
1. Book a balcony on the port (left) side of the ship to get spectacular views.
2. Head to the on board pub and grab a drink before the rush starts.
3. With said drink in hand, head back to your state room and order a bottle of bubbles from room service.
4. Enjoy the beautiful sunset views of Sydney Harbour over those bubbles you just got.
5. When you get out to sea and the sun has gone down head off to one of the ships fantastic shows.
