Port Pirie - city of friendly people

The city of Port Pirie was established 1845 and is located 223km from Adelaide. Port Pirie is South Australia's second largest port. It is known for having the world's largest lead smelter, it produces refined silver, zinc, lead, copper and gold

The smelter

In 1889 a lead smelter was built in Port Pirie to treat Broken Hill ore. In 1915 the smelter was taken over by a joint venture of Broken Hill-based companies, Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS). By 1934 the Port Pirie BHAS became the biggest lead smelter in the world . The smelter gradually passed to Pasminco, then Zinifex, and is now operated by Nyrstar.

The Railway

Port Pirie was known as a railway town and was one of the busiest inland rail centres. A railway line once ran through the centre of town to stop at a beautiful railway station. The station is now the national trust museum.

The Port

In the 1870's and 1880's Port Pirie loaded more wheat ships than Port Adelaide. The port is a major commercial port with export lead, zinc ore and concentrates as its main cargo.

The Silo's

The silo terminal is where wheat, barley and other grains are received, stored and exported to Adelaide. The building of the silos began in 1962 and took 18 years to complete. Grain harvested locally is exported all over the world.

The Northern festival centre

An entertainment and arts centre located in Memorial park. Home to the Keith Michell theatre. Named after the famous actor that once lived in the area. The theatre holds live performances and cinema.

It's amazing how interesting the history is. And not just the history of Port Pirie but all of the little towns and small cities I've been lucky enough to visit. I would love to be able to go back in time and see what these places looked like 100 years ago.
