Travel to Cyprus. Golden beach in the Ghost town of Famagusta

in #travel5 years ago

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was looking at the network photos of modern destroyed cities. I was wondering how abandoned buildings could look like after a global cataclysm or epidemic. What would happen to such cities if they stood abandoned and overgrown with vegetation for many, many years.

Then I already knew about Pripyat and abandoned military bases in different parts of the world. I came across of Detroit and Japanese Ghost towns. But one day I came across a mention of Famagusta. Looking at those pictures at that time I did not even think that one day I will be able to visit this place.

We flew to Cyprus with the whole family in may this year. I have already written many reports about our trip, but the article about the Ghost town of Famagusta was postponed for the last time.

After visiting this day the bustling market and quiet quarters of the Old Town, it was decided to go to the abandoned hotels on the beach. The way was long enough, and we had to go under the hot sun languishing in the heat.

From afar it appeared a tall building that was different from anything around. They had signs of destruction. And on the left, right in the shallow water stuck a real Ghost ship.

When we approached the abandoned hotels closer, it became clear that the area is fenced. You can only go to the gorgeous beach, but the surrounding area is inaccessible to tourists.

A small reference: The" Golden beach " of Famagusta in the mid-twentieth century was truly a pearl of the Mediterranean. It housed large luxury hotels, and this part of the city was built up with the houses of many Hollywood stars. After a short war between the Turks and Greeks in the mid-70s, the island was divided into two zones. Several blocks of Famagusta are still abandoned and fenced off. No one lives here, the buildings gradually decline and collapse from time to time.

The road to the beach is a bit confusing, but it is difficult to get lost here, because all the roads lead here.

While we were making our way to the destination by roundabout ways along the coast, it was noticeable that before there were pools and houses that adjoined directly to the sea. Now there are only skeletons and empty foundations.

The beach! He's truly wonderful. Great sand, umbrellas and plenty of swimmers. But until recently, this place was also fenced and inaccessible to visitors. Apparently, someone decided to move the fence and make part of the beach free for swimming.

Service here is missing, as such. However, we still found a fresh water shower and a toilet, which was closed. But the water in the sea is stunningly clean and clear.

When we got into the water, it was incredibly warm. The fact that there is shallow water and the sun passes through the sky at such an angle that warms its rays all the coast. No wonder this beach is called Golden.

Swimming was very nice and cool. I really have never seen a better quality beach whether in Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey or Italy.

In fact, the beach stretches for many kilometers. In the lens of the camera I could to increase the range of view and looked how huge is the local coastal area.

All the houses around are abandoned. It was a little wild to feel it. Because here you bathe, around it is full of people, but you turn a look aside and here is empty eye sockets look dead houses and hotels. The sight is quite eerie.

To photograph here, it turns out, it is impossible. But I found out about it only when I took some pictures. Security guards prevent tourists from trying to take pictures of the surrounding area.

There is barbed wire everywhere, and further along the coast there are many, many abandoned houses in which life will never be reborn.

Perhaps in the future, when conflicts disappear, this place will be put in order. But this can only be done by completely destroying all the buildings here, because they have long been unsuitable for living. In the meantime, the Ghost town of Famagusta attracts tourists with its mysteries and excellent beaches to tell them their sad story.

What a cool place to explore! I went to an abandoned beach resort in Taiwan recently, fascinating. I would love to visit the one in Cyprus!
