Bozz Travels: Anniversary Trip to Chicago - Part 2

in #travelfeed6 years ago

In my last post, I talked about our trip to Chicago and our first day there. This is the continuation of that story.

After a good long rest, we decided it was time to look for dinner. We walked back towards the bowling alley, but this time we continued on and found ourselves at Rock Bottom Brewery.

Rock Bottom is actually a national chain, but before then we had never heard of it before. We sat down to watch the Tigers game (I think they were in the playoffs) and have dinner. It looks like their menu has changed as well since my wife and I visited, but I remember I got a turkey meatloaf that was really good.

We continued watching the game and drinking the beer you see here long after our food was finished. In fact we stayed there so long that we eventually got hungry again and ordered an appetizer to share before we finally called it a night. The beer was very similar to a lot of the "Belgium Wheat" beers you see in the US these days like Blue Moon or Shocktop.

Due to our proximity to the House of Blues, we were able to see the sign all weekend that was advertising their "Sunday Gospel Brunch". My wife and I had commented to each other earlier on the trip about what that might be like.

Long story short: on our walk back from Rock Bottom, our inhibitions might have been a little lower than normal. We decided, you only live once, and I went to the ticket counter to see if they still had tickets for the show the next morning.

As you can see, they did in fact have tickets left. It was a really great experience! The food was fantastic including biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles, omelettes, etc. They also had free mimosas and bloody mary's, so that was cool too.

The show was developed by renowned gospel artist Kirk Franklin. He (not surprisingly), was not in attendance, but they had a choir from one of the churches in the Chicago area, so that was cool.

If you get a chance to see one of these shows, it is another experience I highly recommend and I believe they hold them at many of the House of Blues establishments throughout the country.

We made the short walk back to our hotel and took a break before we headed down to Navy Pier.

We walked pretty much the full length of the pier and made sure that we stopped for some Garrett Popcorn.

There were people all over the pier, but not overwhelmingly so.

We decided that it might be fun to take a ride on the Ferris wheel. Cue cheesy photo to the left...

After we had finished checking out the pier, we decided that it was time to get some food again. This was our last day in Chicago and we knew that we had to find some Chicago style pizza.

We started walking and soon found ourselves outside of Gino's East.

The waitress let us know that we should get our order in as soon as possible because although they weren't that busy, it usually takes about 45 minutes to bake one of the "pies". We got some bread sticks as an appetizer and placed our order for the traditional sausage pizza.

They basically take a whole handful of ground sausage and flatten it out over the whole pizza. They only went halfway on ours though since my wife isn't a huge fan of sausage. The cornmeal crust was awesome and the whole thing was amazing. There are a lot of other places in Chicago I want to try for deep dish pizza, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Gino's East.

We got a cab back to our hotel after dinner and relaxed in our room the rest of the night. We had to get up early to get to the station for the train ride back the next day and we wanted to get plenty of sleep. The leftover pizza was a great late night snack though!

LOVE the cheesy photo! What kind of grin is that? The I'm afraid of heights but don't want anyone to know... lol

No, that is just the me not everyone gets the chance to see 😁

Oh! then you must share that side of you more often! It made me smile this morning!

I am enjoying reading about this trip. I love that you have taken the opportunity to visit the brewery. One of our best trips ever involved two stops at local breweries and a distillery. We still talk about those visits often.

Those are some if the coolest places!

Enjoying reading and seeing your trip there sounds like it was a great weekend
