As ancient as it can go!

in #travelfeed5 years ago

I visited this small Greek town on a gloomy winter day without many photographic expectations. The weather was bad, the modern town is not the most beautiful one and the ancient ruins are not well preserved. The outcome was a true revelation. Argos took me by surprise and astonished me with its beauty and its history!

The first impression I got entering the town was the same as in dozens of other small towns around Greece, nothing special that is. I hadn't done my homework yet so I didn't know that people live in this exact place for the past 7,000 years! As a settlement, as a village or as a town this piece of land has a huge history! No wonder that Argos is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network!

On the hill above the town is the castle "Larissa". Its construction originates in the prehistoric times, the oldest one I am aware of! The view is fantastic, it is overlooking the whole area and although it is not very well preserved it gave me plenty shooting opportunities!

The town itself is built on and around ancient ruins. I took a shot of a drawing of what Argos looked like a few thousands years ago and I was amazed to see that apart from the theatre it is also the ancient market that was at the exact some spot as the modern one. Insane! The theater is still in use too (for some festivities in the summer) but it could use a more thorough restoration, it really deserves it.

Of course I couldn't resist from taking some pictures of the modern Greeks picking up their grocery at a place which has a similar purpose almost forever!

Even if ancient history is not your thing a walk through this little town will definitely give you the feeling of the continuation of the human race!
