Lol...it is only the same as someone collecting stamps for example. People like stuff from abroad even if they may never go there themselves. People can often use such gifts as goals or reminders of the people who brought them.
As for the snow domes, I hate them but I do know people in Thailand who collect them and I regularly ferry them around from all corners of the world!
