My first solo backpacking trip - part 12

in #travelfeed5 years ago

Hello!

Today was a good day for exercise, much less so for photography.

Lucie and I met Sven at the reception after breakfast. We walked down to the bus station together, where we boarded a bus to the village of Lavena, which offers the tourists a coastal walk. The whole track runs just above the beach, which means we had a view on the ocean practically the whole way. There were some big rocks which have to be made of some quite soft material (my amateur guess would be it's volcanic rock), as the sea is eroding them away. Luckily, the tide was low and erosion was nicely visible:

At approximately the middle of the way we had to cross a river by foot, because the last hurricane tore apart the suspension bridge, and I felt like a genuine jungle explorer, with the shoes around my neck, trying not to fall and wet my wallet, phone and all the photo gear I was carrying.

Near the end of the track we turned inland and the path took us uphill for a bit, towards a waterfall. That part took us about 10 minutes. As we arrived to the waterfall, I was a bit disappointed, because the only way to get to it was by swimming. I obviously couldn't bring my camera and, what's even worse, I forgot to bring my swimsuit. So I could just sit and wait for Sven and Lucie to go have a look. I made a pic from the distance anyway:

We were just about to leave when I glanced at the phone and saw that we're quite late. It was supposed to take 1,5 hours to get one way, but we only had 1 hour and 10 minutes left, plus it was Saturday, which meant that the bus might depart early since it was the last ride they had to make. I decided to jog again, to try and stop the bus before leaving. I can pride myself on making it back in just 40 minutes, sweaty as a pig. 10 minutes after my arrival the bus showed up, and from what the receptionist told me, we were lucky I made it back in time, because the bus would leave without us.

After Sven and Lucie joined me, we took the ride back home. On the way I snapped this photo of a stream running towards the sea (I don't know why, but I liked it enough to remember the place) from a moving bus, as I knew when we would pass it:

I'm afraid that's all for today. I have to mention that today was our last day here in Taveuni; we're boarding a ferry tomorrow morning that will take us back to Suva, from where we'll take a bus to Nadi. The ferry ride will last between 18 and 24 hours, and the bus to Nadi takes another 4, which means we'll have pretty uninteresting Sunday and Monday. I don't think I'll be able to make any interesting photos along the way, so I guess the next update might take a couple of days.

Until then, be excellent to each other!
