How to use a stopover in Amsterdam!

in #travelling6 years ago

Let's start with our Thailand Adventure 2017 with the stopover in Amsterdam.
Last year we decided to travel to Thailand. We always choose to travel in August/September because of an off-season time (there are not so many tourists around) and also because I´m a student and I have free time. If you are scared that this time is a time of monsoons, don´t be! Generally, in Asia, you never know what weather is going to be. We had an experience with rain only twice during about 17 days! My friend travelled in November, which is called mid-season, it rained 6 times!
But back to the today theme! Our trip started 31.8.2017 at the Prague Airport. Our first stop was Amsterdam, and lucky us, the stopover lasted 22 hours. This is the best opportunity to explore the city. I have visited Amsterdam in 2016 so that I had a vision of what to see in 1 day. We arrived in Amsterdam late in the evening and we stayed a night in Mercure Hotel Amsterdam West (reservation via booking.com) near to the airport. The hotel offers charge free shuttle, but just in some intervals. We used a bus, which stopped about 100 m near the hotel.

Let´s go to the city centre!
The next morning we pack our bags and went to explore the city. We took a bus no. 397 to Leidseplein (you can use another stop). One day is of course not enough to see all the beauty of Amsterdam. One day is enough for sightseeing "from outside". You can not see for example museums etc. But I really recommend the Anne Frank Museum, you have to count that you spent here sometime in a queue and about two hours inside.

The Epic "I Amsterdam"
If you don´t have a photo here It is like you do not exist! It is a joke of course but I think this place is the most frequent in Amsterdam. It is located in front of the Rijks Museum. This place here around is called Museumplein and it is because of many museums located here. Funny is that the same sign is next to the airport hall and nobody cares.

Have a fries or waffle!
Yummy! You can buy it on every corner. (+A huge selection of dips)

Have a photo of a bike!
Bikes. They are everywhere. Without bikes is not Amsterdam at all! Maybe this is the reason why I love this city too much. You can also borrow them and explore the magic of this place by bike. Today we get along with photo (many many photos). Watch out! The pedestrian doesn´t have right of way!

Taste a cheese for free!
We just walked around and saw the sign "Cheese Museum". Very nice girl kindly told us information about the manufacturing of a cheese and also we could taste many kinds of delicious Dutch cheese.

Canals
Canals are definitely the biggest attraction in Amsterdam. Let's take photos as much as possible. Every piece of a city has a pure magic! Next, to the canal, you can also find many markets where you can buy mainly seeds of a tulip.

A photo in big Dutch clog
This huge typical Dutch clog you can find at Dam Square. There are also many souvenirs shops.

Red Light District
The famous place where the prostitution is legal. You can see here many large windows with prostitutes, just to pick up...

Let´s go to the airport via the Amsterdam Centraal
The building of Amsterdam Centraal is beautiful by itself. Unfortunately during our visit was under reconstruction.
To the airport, we used this time a train which leads directly to the airport hall.

There are many other ways how to spend time in Amsterdam but it takes a longer time. I just tried to show you how to get the maximum from one day!

Take a deep breath, feel the atmosphere of this beautiful city and prepare to 11 hours flight, next stop: Bangkok!

Sort:

It sounds like a whirlwind tour of Amsterdam! I'm going soon, and will be able to stay about 3 days. I'll definitely visit the Mueumplein while I am there.
