The current antique theater Philipopolis

In the old town of Plovdiv, besides Renaissance architecture and museums, there is something else to see. For example, Antichen theater.

This is one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world. Up close, he gives the impression of luxury and grandeur.

It was built during the time of the Roman emperor Mark Ulpius Trajan at the beginning of the second century. The spectator seats in this theater look to the south.

The outer diameter of the theater is 82 meters. The theater, unlike the amphitheater, has the shape of a semicircle and is intended for theater productions and public gatherings. The theater has 28 steps-seats made of marble. The scene has the shape of a horseshoe, a height of 3.16 meters and a diameter of 26.24 meters. I don't see him for the first time, but every time he amazes me with his size.

Following the example of the Roman theaters, the places of honor of the Plovdiv theater are signed. On the seats were written the names of local rulers, important dignitaries and friends of the emperor.

Today this theater is the emblem of Plovdiv and serves for theatrical performances, as well as for concerts, because of the excellent acoustics. The theater seats 5000 - 7000 spectators.

In the 4th century, the theater was partially destroyed due to fires and earthquakes. It was discovered during archaeological excavations in 1968.

History reference

The history of Plovdiv goes back several thousand years ago. Of course, in different periods, this place was called differently.

In 342 BC, this settlement was ruled by the Macedonian king Philip II, who gave his name to the city - Philipopolis. It is used in various versions to this day.
