Tree Farm In Spring

Ten years ago my family and I cleared about two acres of land and we planted over 200 Black Walnut, Cherry, and Figured Poplar Superior Grafted trees.

This is a picture of one of the Walnut trees in early fall.

Tree shelters protect trunk of trees from deer rubs. and vole damage as they tend to gnaw at the base of the trunk. All aspects of maintaining our tree plantation is handled without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. In this picture you can see a live trap baited with a piece of apple set next to the vole hole.

One of our biggest problems were the deer eating the new growth in early spring. In talking to a local farmer, he suggested spraying the trees with an egg and milk solution. Wow does this work great. All you need to do is mix the eggs with the milk in a blender and spray away. The ratio is 2 dozen eggs to a gallon of milk. Not only does this work on our trees, it is a good way to protect any vegetation the deer may be browsing on. It is all natural, cheep, and is a sure fire way to protect any beloved plants. If you need to you can mix a smaller batch of 6 eggs to a quart of milk.

The labor intense application of hay at the base of every tree and the weeding around the trees eliminates the use of pesticides. My wife's uncle lives up the road from us. We barter with him for the hay, in return we will give him maple syrup we produce on our farm.
