50 shades of black

Colin Kaepernick started a movement. It was a movement to get the millions of people who attend football games on Sunday and entertain themselves watching the violent game to realize something destructive is going on in society.

The movement started with Colin first wearing socks that read black lives matter. Also Kaepernick wore t shirts after practice that read the names of Trevon Martin and other young black men who were shot by white cops or by vigilante white men standing behind discriminatory laws like stand your ground. Colin took note of the response to wearing clothing designed to send a message, and the response was weak and not impactful. He was seen as a lone distraction on the 49 ers team voicing his opinion but silently. There was not real support from other players in the league showing a united front.

At some point Colin Kaepernick decided to take the discussion to the people who were the most influential, the fans.
Raising awareness in America has to be an uncomfortable process. The media, schools and society as a whole has dumbed down the comprehension of the issues for average Americans to the point where the issue itself is not understood.

The simple question was, how do you get people in America to recognize that we have a national crisis. Black men being killed by white cops and white vigilantes using the stand your ground law as a license to kill.

I get it, people get offended when they feel like the players kneeling or sitting down is disrespecting the military. People feel outrage and feel like there ancestors are being disrespected. For one second put yourself in the shoes of a black man or woman who goes into a state of fear when they are pulled over by a white cop. Put your self in the shoes of the family of the African American man who was shot last week in his home by an off duty female white cop. African Americans feel outrage and disrespect everyday not just on football Sunday.

When is the right time to protest? When people are not watching or taking notice. Sorry to inconvenience your game but young black men are dying.

Isn't also disrespectful for the country not to shout outrage for black men being killed for reasons that white men or women would not be harmed for.

Nike has decided to make Colin Kaepernick the face of its just do it campaign. I think the choice was bold brave and makes a statement. Thank you Colin Kaepernick for standing up for African Americans by sitting down.
