Tribes Waiting for Communities?

in #tribes5 years ago

After a strong start on Steem-Engine and activating the Steemit.com clones and, in some cases the DTube clones, tribes kinda stopped or slowed down developing their own identities, as @midlet remarked in his post.

By identity I don't necessarily mean the type of content it supports and what is not allowed, plus the filtering that goes with this.

This is important of course. But just as important it is to have your own visual identity, that sets you aside from the other clones, as well as special benefits.

One thing I remarked recently was the commitment of the ReggaeSteem tribe to bring value to their tribe by setting up certain touristic deals with their local Jamaican resorts. Check out the deals they made where JAHM or JSNS can be used to pay for the stay and additional benefits! Now... that's more than a cloned interface!

There are other tribes which I've seen offer a ROI to stakeholders in STEEM or SBD.

I believe SCT pays out dividends, and, far as I know, recently SCT author rewards can only be earned when posting through their interface. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't closely follow the SCT tribe, I just remember reading this information somewhere. If I'm not wrong, that's a way to make your tribe members use your own interface.

I've noticed SteemAce started to pay out benefits to stakeholders as well.

I would still work on customizing the interface, and that's true for every tribe as far as I know. Some tribes made some minor changes to the user interface, and even those are noticeable compared to the standard clones.

Additional benefits matter, because, besides the content and your visual identity, it's what sets you aside from the other tribes. Should they be unique to your tribe? Not necessarily, they can also be found elsewhere. As long as they are very handy to your tribe members, who don't have to go elsewhere to find that information or benefit, that's good for you.

It's not really a tribe if all tribe members stay separately, is it?

It's not the first time I am wondering if some tribes are just waiting for the Communities to arrive to see where to go from there.

What will happen when they will finally be here?

Will the existing tribes create matching communities on Steem?

Will some of them migrate to the new communities and restart over there? Let's keep in mind that to migrate SMTs are also needed, Communities are not enough.

Will they remain loyal to the tribe+token setup and other communities with similar interests will be created on Steem?

There is still time until Communities arrive. Even more time until SMTs will be here on the mainnet. This time should not be wasted by existing tribes, in my opinion, because momentum will be lost.

Thanks @gadrian for recognizing our efforts with @reggaesteem. I've been reading up tirelessly about React, the javascript framework behind the 'clones'. Thing is with a good dev, the templates can really be customized totally given time and the patience to first digest the code, then innovate.

Dtube clones are another beast, the code is minimized (no breaks, no comments). Took me about 3 days to break it down and comment sections well enough to feel comfortable making the commits. Check out our tube, ReggaeTube.io; not sure if there's another clone customized to that point yet. But our target there is YoutTube traffic, Steem is a bonus.

Another thing I'de like to add is another perspective to the SCOTS and future SMTs: they are like ERC20 tokens, only a lot more powerful and easier to launch/distribute due to the social network behind the blockchain itself. So many mainstream projects launched as ERC20's. Steem is now way more powerful, believe it's only a matter of time before devs and more crypto projects jump on board. Some may not want anything to do with Steem other than launching their token.... Richard Hart launching his coin on ETH comes to mind, if he launched on STEEM the traction would be way better.

Thanks again bro cheers !BEER

Command accepted!

Thank you for your comment!

I will surely check out ReggaeTube.io as well.

I agree, if some ERC20 tokens would migrate to SMTs (or even as SCOTs if that's what they need), it would work much better for them and through the added attention and projects, to Steem too. I just hope those who are not dead are willing to make the switch, and the owners behind some of the failed ERC20 projects are willing to give it another go on Steem.

Congratulations for what you've done with ReggaeSteem so far and for your plans to improve the interfaces further, once you feel comfortable with their code!

This post has been included in the latest edition of The Steem News - a compilation of the key news stories on the Steem blockchain.

The more general a tribe, the less unity it has. One reason I like #ReggaeSteem is because it is more specific. Everyone there has something in common as a tribe should. Be it a love for Carribean food, music, culture, tropical vacations, etc. at least there is a uniting theme, there is an identity. I feel some of the other tribes are too broad to draw everyone together and the purpose is lost.

It certainly easier to form stronger bonds in a smaller and specific tribe than in a general one, where various interests coexist.

This will be a moment of changes and turbulence.

Maybe... If Communities and SMTs would come at the same time, I believe even more. But as far as I understood, Communities will arrive first.

As ourselves on the Steemit platform, Tribes need to find their way the same. They don't have a perfect recipe and neither the development power to make everything they want for their niche community. Given time, I am sure that will change and maybe the SMT will make this process simplet or at least I hope so.

It's true, active developers who know what they are doing in this ecosystem may not be easy to find by most tribes, because they are likely pulled in many directions already.
