Movie review - Spectral (2016)

in #tv6 years ago (edited)

This movie first came out on Netflix on December 2016. I remember I enjoyed it a lot so I watched it again, and decided to introduce it to you sci-fi / horror fans on Steemit who haven't watched it yet.

But first, the trailer to give you a taste of what it is about:

SPOILERS WARNING AHEAD!!

The movie is basically a military action flick with a paranormal twist, following DARPA researcher Dr.Clyne (played by James Badge Dale) as he is summoned to the midst of a civil war in Moldova.

The US military in that country has requested his expertise as the hyperspectral goggles invented by him, currently being used by the ground troops in Moldova, has been picking up unexplained sightings. One of such sightings directly caused the death of a Delta Squad member.

Accompanied by CIA officer Fran (Emily Mortimer), Clyne embeds himself with the Delta Force in the field, and witnesses for himself the ghostly apparitions who kills by touch and are appearing in alarmingly large numbers.

Trapped inside a city that is quickly being overrunned by these entities that are impervious to conventional weapons, Clyne has to find a way to stop them - not just to survive, but to prevent them from spreading out of the city and the country.

Although billed as a mindless action B-movie, the film actually has a lot of heart and outstanding production value that rivals tentpole hollywood productions. The story, while nothing profound, kept me intrigued until the end of the movie. If you look beyond the shoot-y explode-y  surface, you can find hints of a message about the terrible human cost of war, and how they literally came back to terrorize the living occupants of the city

I won't spoil the twist that reveals the true nature of these "ghosts", but suffice to say it is tragic as it is haunting.

My only gripe is some of the unrealistic narrative during end to the third act and the fourth act, where the characters are able to build an arsenal of weapons for several squadrons of troops in just one night, complete with bespoked suits for said weapons. The designs for those weapons, suits and the location of the final battle also effective transported the film deep into futuristic scifi, which is kind of jarring as they just came from a realistic contemporary setting.

The actors play their role as well as you would expect for a military action film. I am quite fond of James Badge Dale (you might recognize him as one of the villains in Ironman 3) and I thought he was decent in this flick...well as good as the script allows him to be. But I think he plays it better here than his Marvel cinematic outing.

The visual effects are beautifully done, but I would expect nothing less from Weta Digital (and Weta workshop, who built the physical props eg: weapons and suits). Like I mentioned earlier, the production value is extraordinary for something meant for the small screen. This is also one of those movies that I thought that was better on the TV than a theatrical release.

If you like sci-fi, military and paranormal themed filmes, pick up a big bowl of popcorn, switch off your brain and give this movie a go. It might be forgettable, but it certainly is fun while it lasted.
