[TV] 10 New Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Shows To Watch Out For In 2018

in #tv6 years ago

It seems like we truly do live in the Golden Age of television programming at the present time, with there just being so much to choose from, it's hard to know where to start. Here's a list of 10 shows that I'm particularly looking forward to this year.

The Crossing

The Crossing is an upcoming American sci-fi/thriller series which uses a very current topic in its storytelling; refugees. The story revolves around an American town that starts taking in refugees from a war-torn country, which on the surface doesn't sound very science-fiction, but there's a twist. These refugees are from American 180 years into the future. This show starts airing on 2nd April on ABC.

Castle Rock

I've got high hopes for this one, which is a psychological/horror series based on the collected works of Stephen King, a favourite horror writer of mine. It is set in the fictional town of Castle Rock and weaves characters and themes from many of King's stories. None other than J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot are producing this, so I'm expecting good things. The creepy trailer is laden with Easter Eggs for King's fans.

Nightflyers

Nightflyers is a sci-fi epic brought to us by George R. R. Martin. Yes, that George R.R. Martin. Don't expect Game of Thrones though, as this series is based upon a totally different novella written by the author. It's being aired on SyFy in the US, and it'll be on Netflix for us Brits later this year. All I know of the story so far is that a crew of space explorers embark on an mission to find a mysterious alien ship. The dark teaser certainly gives me hope for this one, and seems very similar to Ridley Scott's Alien universe, which I'm not going to complain about.

The First

The First is a collaboration between Hulu (US) and Channel 4 (UK), and will be the first full TV outing for film veteran Sean Penn. No word on exactly when this will air, other than just later this year, and there's no trailer to watch yet either sadly. The show will follow a team of astronauts as they become the first humans on Mars, as well as their families back on Earth. Stay tuned for more info on this as I find it.

Krypton

Krypton is the long-awaited prequel series of sorts for Superman, set on his birth planet of the same name 200 years or so before Kal-el's birth, and focuses on his Grandfather. So far there have been 10 episodes developed by David S. Goyer and Damian Kindler for Syfy. I haven't watched the first episode myself yet, but I've heard mostly positive reviews, although some mixed. Definitely one to watch for fans of Superman or the DC universe.

Lost In Space

Lost In Space is an upcoming Netflix original series based upon the 1965 tv series of the same name (and let's just forget about that movie with Matt Leblanc, the less said about that the better). It follows the adventures of a family of pioneering space colonists whose spaceship veers off-course. I really hope they do this one right, as it's written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who I'd never heard of but they've apparently written Gods of Egypt and a few other duds. The trailer does look stunning, so here's to hoping!

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

This one doesn't really fit in with the rest of the shows here, but it's being written, directed and produced by the Coen brothers, known for great films such as Fargo, True Grit and The Big Lebowski. It's an anthology western series that follows six different storylines. This will be the brothers first venture into television, so I'm expecting big things from this one. I strongly recommend you watch the Fargo tv series as well, it's also an anthology but with each season being a different story, the first season focusing on a variant of the film's storyline.

The Rain

The Rain is Netflix's first original Danish drama, following their success with German show Dark. It's a post-apocalyptic survival show that sees two Danish siblings emerge from a bunker six years after a virus carried by the rain wipes out almost the entire Scandinavian population. It'll explore this new world the kids find themselves in, free of parental guidance or social convention. Should be arriving on the small screen sometime in the spring.

The Terror

This horror story is based upon a novel of them same name, and is about a Royal Naval expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage when it’s attacked by “a mysterious predator”. Ridley Scott is involved as an Executive Producer, so expect good things from this one. It's already begun airing both in the UK and US, with the first two episodes up for viewing. Highly recommended.

The Umbrella Academy

The final entry in this list, The Umbrella Academy is a Dark Horse comic-book adaptation about a dysfunctional family of superheroes who work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities. It stars Ellen Page as well as Robert Sheehan, Tom Hopper, and Mary J. Blige. No word on when we can expect it to hit our screens, but it's a Netflix show so expect little warning.

That's the list, is there anything on there you're looking forward to watching? Anything you weren't expecting? Looking forward to watching Lost in Space amongst the others listed.

So much good tv to watch. So little time. Westworld season 2 is about to come out too!!!

Tell me about it! I've got such a backlog at the moment, I still haven't got round to watching the latest Twin Peaks season.
I nearly forgot about Westworld! Ah I can't wait for that

Whats twin peaks? Heard of it never seen it might have to look into it. Were watching hemlock grove at moment it's good

I... erm... what's twin peaks?! Oh you should definitely check it out, it was a show that aired in the early 90s. Made by David Lynch, it only had two seasons and a movie but last year they released a third season. Heard mixed things about this new season, but you should definitely check out the first two. There's nothing else like it really.
I've heard of Hemlock Grove, but it's one of those that's on the bottom of my list.

Il be looking into it for sure! Fair enough - its pretty good so far. Only on first season.

Did you watch End of the F**ken world? Was brilliant binge watched it in one night!

I'm sure I'll get around to watching it, autumn/winter tends to be when I catch up on things when there's less on.
No, but that's been recommended to me by a few people now, my Dad included. It's on Netflix right?
I dunno if it's your kinda thing or not, but have you tried watching the Arrowverse? (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl etc.)

Its a brilliant show highly reccomend. British so it has the dark humor. Dont know haven't really seen to much super hero stuff but I can try for sure 😊

I'm all about the dark humour! Just finished Inside No.9 for the third time last night, I highly recommend it if you like you're dark comedies.
They're a bit on the cheesey side, particularly Supergirl, but overall they're definitely worth watching if you've got some spare time. Quite a few seasons in total, so plenty there.

Cant wait te watch the crossing. Seems like there's so much they can do with the people from the future and it is a game changer.
I loved that story and ill watch it as soon as it airs.
Thank you for info mate

Me too! I'm hoping to watch the first episode this weekend (you can find it online but shhh), and then I've got the first two Krypton lined up as well. I've got high hopes for The Crossing I have to admit.
No problem bud! Thanks for stopping by
