Some time ago I’ve written about the ‘best’ time to submit a blogpost so you’ll receive worldwide exposure.
I came up with the term 4 o'clocky and I thought this might be a great idea to make a blogpost every day at 4 o'clock local time with this title. Every day I’ll submit a blogpost about something that keeps me busy, a challange, a contest or something important enough to share so Lets blog on and See you every day here at 4 !

This is My 4 o’clocky for today...

Everywhere ( do u fortunately also where we live !) in the Netherlands the number of oak processionary caterpillars has increased sharply.

In many places there is a triple increase compared to last year, according to a count from the Knowledge Center Oak Processionary Caterpillar in 20,000 trees in Brabant, Gelderland, Noord-Limburg , Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The stinging hairs of the oak processionary caterpillar can cause serious health problems in humans and animals. And with the oaks near school i am worried. Very worried. They have very stinging hairs, which spread far from nests, remain active for years. The fact that there are now also large populations of caterpillars in forests is possibly due to the fact that the oak procession butterflies have visited cooler places in the hot summer of 2018. That desturbed naturel way. There were also many extra caterpillars last year. According to someone i talked to it is also possible that the animals were forced to search for new areas.

I asked the questions:
The stinging hairs of a caterpillar cause nuisance. Are those the big hairs you see?
• No, it's not those big white, long hairs. The stinging hairs are very small and cannot be seen with the naked eye. If the caterpillar feels threatened, he shoots those stinging hairs. And the wind is fluimt them everywhere, without you knowing or feeling.

I have an oak processionary caterpillar in my living area, what should I do?
• Avoid contact and certainly do not fight the nest yourself. Only if you are really bothered by it, is it best to report this to the municipality, because it then engages a specialized company. They take it away before trouble can begin.

Can we do something ourselves against the oak processionary caterpillar?
• By placing many other plants around the oak, you increase biodiversity. This is where birds come in that eat the caterpillars at an early stage. They love them and they can resist the hairs.

Its a problem thank God for the fact that we have a holiday in 2,5 weeks cause its getting worse and i do t want injuries.

Do you have them in your country ?

Thanks for stopping by, its appreciated

Hi, we have the same problems here in Germany. A lot of work for the insect repeaters.

Here they have a 8 week waiting list to come and remove the nests

Oh my goodness! We have tent caterpillars that come in mass like your image of the oak processionary caterpillar but they don't have any stinging hairs. -They are just really destructive to the vegetation and they make such a mess when they come in droves and can defoliate the trees! We had them for a couple of years but this year with the long extended period of extreme cold and the late spring there are only a few this year - thank-goodness!
That would be very concerning to have it close to a school yard! Has it been reported to the municipality?
Hope you see a decline soon and everyone keeps safe!

Natuurlijk heeft Nederland geen patent op de processierupsen...hier in België hebben we ook de nodige problemen met die diertjes.
Ze verstoorden al het begin van "Rock Werchter" (de Belgische tegenhanger van Pinkpop)...
