@jerrybanfield I hope you enjoy reading as this gives you insight as to what the national youth service Corp in my country is all about.

It was all about last week monday, exactly one week today.

It was a beautiful day for us as Abia state Corp members celebrated the is at 45 years of it's existence today.

HURRAY!!!

It's being 45 years of selfless and dedicated service by able and vibrant youth of the nation.

Am happy to be serving my fatherland, it's being an awesome experience.

** A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF NYSC**

The NYSC scheme was established by Decree No.24 of 22 May 1973 now CAP 84 Act of National Assembly 2004 in furtherance of Federal Government's Post war policy of reconstruction, Reconciliation and Rehabilitation and to raise a new crop of highly disciplined and detribalized Nigerian youth affording them the opportunity of service to communities other than their own, within the context of National development and integration.

The scheme was therefore introduced to heal the wounds of the unfortunate civil war that took place between 1967-1970, a war that occurred due to lack of proper integration between the different people that constitute this country.

Given the large size of the country and it's multi-religious and multi-ethnic composition, the need arose to bring about a unifying program to remove artificial obstacles in the way of National unity.

This was how NYSC came into being by Decree 24 of 1973.

To make the scheme respond to dynamics of its environment Decree 24 of 1973 was repealed and replaced with Decree (now act) No.51 of June 1993 which specifies additional objectives of the scheme.

A very lovely initiative right??

THE OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:

  • To inculcate discipline in youths.

  • To raise moral tone of the youths.

  • To develop in our youths the attitudes of mind, acquired through shared experience.

NYSC MISSION

The mission of the scheme is to mobilize and groom graduate youths for the promotion of National unity, sustanable development, self reliance, and prepare them for the challenges of leadership.

NYSC VISION

The vision is to develop a scheme that is dynamic enough to meet new challenges and become the leading light of youth organizations in Africa.

This Mission and Vision of the scheme is achieved by spreading youths from different regions to other parts of the country where they are not familiar with.

Now the essence is for the Corp members to get to study the culture of other people totally different from what they were used, their food, language, etc.

For example, youths in the Eastern region could be sent to the North or West, Vice versa.

This exercise gives room for job opportunities as this Corp members from the East may be retained in the North.

It gives room for inter-tribal marriage, good communication and relationship with other people.

The NYSC is a one year scheme recommended for all graduates to pass through.

The scheme begins with a 3 weeks training in a camp.

The camp is made up of all Corps members sent to a particular state.

It's usually fun though stressful at the beginning due to the excessive drills and trainings till every one gets used to it.

This trainings are done to strengthen the Corp members, their are also provisions for skill acquisitions, Lecture and games.

After the 3 weeks, the posting letters are distributed for everyone to report at their places of primary assignments in different Local Government Areas.

The 3 weeks camping is also an avenue for Corp members to get to know one another before the camp is over.

Aside Camp, Corp members sent to a particular place of primary assignment also get to bond with each other or in the Community Development Service (CDS).

The CDS group is a group created to help Corp members access the need of the LGA where they are serving and find solution to the community problems.

This scheme is a selfless service just like the first stanza of the NYSC National Anthem says:

Youths Obey the clarion call

Let us lift our Nation high

Under the Sun or in the rain

With dedication and selflessness

Nigeria is ours, Nigeria we serve
.

So today in celebration of the scheme at 45, we did a rally around the city of Umuahia.

It was all fun as we matched round, jubilating, singing and dancing because WE are the reason for the celebration.

Without US NYSC wouldn't be, thus no Celebration.

In the video above you would see how some Corper members were dancing in celebration.

This is a cross-section of Corp members in the NYSC secretariat just before we took off for the rally.

Beautiful city of Abia state.

Corpmembers with NYSC officials during the rally.

The next day was our sanitation day and we were shared in groups to different places for sanitation.

My group was sent to the market area to clean and tidy the place.

It was all fun doing the work, personally i was used to community service back then in university as i was also serving in my fellowship so this kind of service was instilled in me back then.

The market men and women were all happy to see us work and keep the entire market clean.

It was a great day, and am happy to be serving my nation.
