A 4-hour load out

Last night I had a 'load-out' at a casino in Las Vegas. I'm a on-call stagehand. I typically do lighting or electrical work for corporate events and expos. Work for me as a senior union member of 14 years has all but disappeared into to occasional show load in or load out, unfortunately. Still, it was nice to get out of the house and knock some rust off.

Luckily for my roommate, he was on the same call as me and did not have to take the bus into work as by some act of God I still have my car that im struggling to make payments on. With our tools in tow, off we went to work!

When we showed up to work, we were forced to wait for a party to end. The show had finished and now a party had to end before we could strike the lights from the truss structure in the air.

Then as we were waiting, our boss had gave us the run down for the evening's loadout.

We had ground lights so that had to be taken care of first.

Once the ground lights were struck, the truss had to come in, in order to strike the lights on it.

After a few hours, we were done striking lights and it was now time to push boxes out of the room and into the elevator.

Once these boxes were loaded onto the elevator we were cut and told to go home! When this happens I typically run or walk really fast to my car!

Here is a funny video where I couldn't find the bitcoin atm that I thought was once here. Maybe was but now it's these photo booth atms. No, they are not really photo booths!

That was it. Sorry for the limited pictures and videos.

Sort:

My brother inlaw has just moved mainly into the corporate side after years of doing sound for bands. He fought the idea of going corporate due to loving music and being part of that, but has found the money and hours are much better being corporate. The downside is nobody seems to hire people on and everyone is 1099 sub contractors in his field so work can be very unpredictable.

That is the push in Vegas right now. They hired hundreds of unqualified union guys and placed the blame on them ie the union. Only problem is this town is losing clients because of the hundreds of unqualified personel Encore productions is hiring. Freeman will now easily make everything non union in Vegas and it will be all 1099 work. I was warned 8 years ago about it and now Freeman's plan to obliterate the stagehand union in vegas is nearly complete. Is your brother in a right to work state?

We are a right to work state, I think. Illinois. It's interesting as unions are strong here, but his position seems to have a lot of 1099 work vs full time. Right now he works for 3 or 4 shops to make sure he always has work and luckily once he works for a company many are asking for him to come back as he does good work. Hopefully with enough time at this he will have a solid group of customers demanding him and things will be more consistent.

Audio guys hard workers? Lmao! Usually good ones dont work hard and always talk about their degree or how they were so-n-so's sound guy. Yeah being qualified, following contracts, and working hard is not even what is expected from the union much less the sales people selling the show. Production in this town is losing their work to non union companies like 3g even. Its a complete mess. Also im fairly certian Illinois is not a right to work state and Ibew does a majority of stage work not iatse but that is changing slightly.

You are correct, IL isn't a right to work state. This battle has been going on for years and had it backwards in my mind.

BTW, Just read your tagline and might suggest that if you want some worth curating take a look at Pay If Forward Curation Contest. At the bottom of the page I have a list of the entries which each feature 2 minnows. Might help you find a few worth giving a vote to. We are always looking for more people to visit the entries and give a little love.

Speaking of which I better get over there and confirm more of the entries.

Great Ulog @dynamicgreentk !! Look like an interesting job, despite having to wait for party goers to leave.
I saw @thedarkhorse mentioned his wonderful Pay It Forward Curation Contest

Well...@zanoni featured you as being his most influential person on Discord. So I figured I would stop in let you know (which you probably already know) and give you a pat on the back for a change :D

Haha! Well done. I actually think these pictures are awesome.

Thank you, I do have a nicer than I should have phone.

Great for you @dynamicgreentk, your job means you can go to different places, you are in a good position to blog and document what you are doing in your work.

I wish this was the case. Im typically not allowed to do this but i have nothing to lose with my dying union job and everything to gain from Steemit!

That's the spirit man. And you are right there is nothing to lose.
