ULOG #3 : Meugang Day, A Unique Tradition Eating Beef Welcoming Ramadan

This is my third day in #ulog, Thank You Sir @surpassinggoogle for initiating this one. Today I wanna share about my culture in my place.

The atmosphere of the Market on this morning is very crowded, very different from the usual day. Today the market is filled with buyers and sellers of cows. This is an annual phenomenon every time the Acehnese, Indonesia when welcoming Ramadan that falls on May 17, 2018. This happiness occurs in every market in Aceh, two days before the fast, yesterday and today, people out of the house early in the morning to buy meat, as well as meat sellers, suddenly crowded on the street to sell meat.

This unique tradition is known as Meugang or Meugang Day. This tradition only occurs in Aceh, one of the provinces in Indonesia when welcoming the month of Ramadan. The habit of buying meat and eating with family is a tradition that has been going on since the year 1607 during the Sultan Iskandar Muda. Meugang Day is a series of Acehnese activities to buy meat and eat beef for two days before Ramadan. Eating processed meat made by the Acehnese is that the menu of "luxury" as a symbol of togetherness regardless of status and class, the poor and the rich, they all buy meat to eat with their families to welcome the month of Ramadan.

In ancient times, before becoming part of the State of Indonesia, Aceh was a Kingdom led by Sultan Iskandar Muda. During the time of Sultan Iskandar Muda this tradition began when nobles in Aceh distributed food, clothing to the poor and orphans in Aceh. This share-giving celebration is marked by slaughtering a cow which is then distributed to the community equally. The people of Aceh never eaten meat on a typical day, and consider eating meat as a sumptuous food of the Royal nobles. In the end this tradition continues until now, so the Aceh family became accustomed to buy and bring home meat for the family on the Meugang Day.

After buying the meat, they continue to buy ready-made spices, choosing only what spices they like. usually they choose three kinds of spices menu. one of them is curry seasoning.
