The three campuses of the University of Cebu (UC), College of Computer Studies (CCS) such as the Main, Banilad, and Lapulapu and Mandaue Campus is having a curriculum mapping for the course of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), and Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS).

This curriculum is to be implemented effective this first semester school year 2018-2019. Mapping of the courses must be based on the Program Outcomes (PO) of the university.

The Mapping of the Program Outcomes.

We started our mapping at 09:00H with the brainstorming on the specific Program Outcomes (PO) and end up in exactly 17:00H based on out time allocation. There are three (3) great minds in UC Main, two (2) great minds in UC Banilad and four (4) in UC Lapulapu and Mandaue. The brainstorming takes three hours for the first round of analyzing the different specific outcomes for the major subjects of the courses mentioned above. More heads are better than one because even if we have so many tasks to do, but it lightens up because we contributed the best knowledge and ability to the most complicated subjects in the curriculum.

This was happening during our brainstorming which there is a need to focus on some discussion regarding why we choose that certain PO's.

We take our lunch at ten minutes (11:50H) before twelve noon. Then after that we continue of discussion and brainstorming so that we can proceed to the next level.

Some Programs Outcomes:

  • Communications;
  • Knowledge in Computing;
  • Modern Techniques in Computing (Basic and Advance);
  • Program Analysis (Basic and Advance);
  • Professionalism and Social Responsibility;
  • Life-long Learning;
  • Software Development (Basic and Advance);
  • Individual and Teamwork;
  • Project Management (Basic and Advance).

These are the Program Outcomes we need to map depending on the need of the specific major subject areas of the different courses offered.

We are exchanging ideas for the second round of our thorough discussion. We are having fun, even if it is too complicated for some areas, but we still did it.

In mapping those PO's to our specific major subject is in need of intense discussion. We have to identify the specific Course Outcomes based on the Program Outcomes we have identified. There are three areas such as Introduce (I), Emphasize (E), and Practice (P).

The different subjects have two or more PO's depending on the weight of the subject. The minimum is two (2) and maximum is nine (9). Usually the first year subject first semester is more on introducing and emphasizing the concepts, techniques, and methods of the subject matter while Programming subjects are in need of analyzing, practicing and implementing in relation to the real world computing's solution.

This way we can help the students from the basic to the broader application if they are going to continue their journey. They must be guided on the right track of the course so that they can achieve their goal in their four years of study in their chosen field.

In connection to our mapping in which it be will implemented for the First Semester that will start on June 2018. There are specific Strands from their Senior High School that will qualify for the courses such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), ABM (Accountancy, Business and Management), General Academic Strands (GAS) and others.

Students are categorized with the following:

  • Category A for Senior High Graduates

  • Category B - Graduated before K-12 implementation on or before March 2015 and finished High School through Alternative Learning System or its other counterpart. The Students are advised to proceed CAD for Evaluation if they are going to undergo Bridging Program or Preparatory Course.

  • Category C - Transferees|Shiftees|Returnees and second coursers. The students must submit Transcript of Records (TOR) / Copy of Grades to the Dean of the college for Evaluation and then after that the dean will choose either to use the New or Old curriculum depending on the results of the evaluation.

Here are some of the Guidelines

CoursesSTEMICTGAS, ABM, and others
BSITFor Pilot Section: SCIENCE and MATHEMATICS subject grades are 85 to 100Hardware Servicing and Computer Programming grades are 85 to 100Block Sections D and G
BSCSFor Pilot Section: SCIENCE and MATHEMATICS subject grades are 85 to 100Hardware Servicing and Computer Programming grades are 85 to 100With General Point Average of 90 to 100

The Enrolment-in-charge facilitates student enrolment as per recommendation depending on the course best fitted to the students.

The mapping is the most important part of the curriculum because we develop the students with holistic, relevant and lifelong learning with the core values of the university which is Innovation, Camaraderie, Alignment, Respect, and Excellence (ICARE).
