ulog #6: I was assigned as a Career Guidance for students on the track of Information and Communication Technology
Students will enroll their course without really knowing what is the specific course fitted to them. Before they can enrol for their specific course they will undergo CAREER GUIDANCE or career path of the courses they want to be in college. It is one of the most complex decision because your future lies on it. For I know some students feel regret after three years of struggling their course. Some of them go to school not because they like or love it, but because their parents, friends, aunts, uncles and many other people said that it is one of the most in demand course right now.
One of the best things that the school initiated that career guidance is that not only the student is aware of the course but also the parents as well. We recommend some of them to bring their parents so that they can understand if we will not allow to take the course. I was assign to the three (3) courses such as Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), and Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS).
Here are some of the Requirements:
- Student Report Card
- Students must be presents during the interview
- Parents if possible or guardians
- Good moral
- Birth Certificate
- 3 pieces 2x2 pictures for the forms to be filled up after.
Report Card
One of the requirements in taking BSCS must be no grade of below 85 for the 3 major subjects such as MATHEMATHICS, SCIENCE, and ENGLISH and if possible all other subject in Senior High School. It is because BSCS deals more on computing, theory, concepts and techniques that will apply some mathematical solution to the problem. This course focuses Computer Programming, Algorithms, Logic Computation and Simulation, Computer Theory and Techniques and many other computer science subjects that in need of these three areas.
The students are allowed to enrol BSIT must be no grade of below 80 for the 3 major subjects such as MATHEMATHICS, SCIENCE, and ENGLISH. This course focuses on becoming Application and Data analyst, Data Scientists, Database/Data Administrator, IT consulting and technical support, Programmers, System Analysts.
The students are allowed to enrol BSIS is an open course, because it is less stressful than the two courses mention above. It focuses on the Information System side and Business side. They have programming, but not as deep as BSCS and they have also IT applications, but not as deep as BSIT in the Philippines settings.
If the students really wanted to take the course of their choice even if they know already the overview of their course from first year to fourth year, we will still allow them to enrol yet under the Two Years Program that is ladderize to the three bachelor degree stated above. But if the student feels that their course is not meant for them they will shift to other course. What is important there is we are trying to give them chances to have experience the reality of their choice.
I will discuss with them what will be their major subject in the first year until they graduate that would include weight of every semester when it comes to hardship along their journey. The parents also will help their children to have their choices. I give option to them as well during my interview if they have to make good in their studies then there is a possibility that they can make it until the end.
Yes! There is what we called as academic freedom or degree freedom, but sometimes they need our expertise to guide them that they will be on the right track of their choice. I explain to them that you need to consider tuition fees on the delays of your course where you cannot graduate on time. The time and effort exerted may not be wasted as well.
Based on our recommendation to the students who listen to our career guidance they were able to graduate on time equipped with the knowledge that they wanted. The 80% of them are now successful in their life. I thank God for having the chance of helping students when it comes to decision making with the courses or degree they wanted to be in college.
