Hello, my dear @steemians! How are you today? I would like to share my experience with our company immersion for the first five days.

This is the third largest site in the Philippines and first in the Visayas Region. This happened during our actual testing of the equipment used and the evolution of the different protocol that SMART has offered to the subscribers.

The first and largest in the Visayas Region tower or cell site.

As an educator most especially in the field of Information and Communication Technology and Engineering, there is a need for updates when it comes to the latest innovation of the technology. It also part of the task to bridge the gap between the industry and the university.

Based in one of the Engineer-in-charge (EIC) during our actual testing that after five years in college there are more subjects to learn as the real life of work evolves. Learning is a life-long partner in the real world because when studying in college, there is a certain book to follow from cover to cover but in work sometimes it will start at the middle, backward, forward and mix of ways in learning the technology.

The lecture series of 3 1/2 half days was remarkable, additional knowledge learned from the discussions.

First 2 days Topic Discussed:

  • Technology Evolution
  • Technology Comparison
  • Smart Technology Path
  • Global System for Mobile (GSM)
  • Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA)
  • Long-Term Evolution (LTE)

Learning the evolution of technology contributes the development of the different protocols, services, structures, and architectures.

One of the EIC troubleshot the problem of one site in the Nothern area. He also introduces on how to identify the different problem arise on the site. The relative information he taught us makes us familiar with the recent equipment they are using.

The first two days of our discussion focus on the area of ACCESS and SUPPORT concepts and how the technology changes from Voice to Ethernet.

The 1 1/2 days focuses on the TRANSMISSION as one of the important factors in communication and the other 1/2 day is intended for testing the actual equipment of the cell site live data using the oldest and newest tester available.

Topics covered on:

  • Overview of Transmission System
  • Transmission Medium
  • Transmission Technology
  • Synchronization
  • Microwave planning and design
  • Internet Protocol (IP) and Ethernet

What is transmission?

It is the electrical transfer of signal message or other forms of data from one location to another.

What are transmission medium?

  • Copper Cable.
The transmission using the metallic wire. It has the lowest capacity, vulnerable to route damage, noise, and attenuation. It has also long service interruptions, limited availability, and expansion.
  • Microwave Radio.
Microwave links carry thousands of voice channels. It utilizes airwaves as a transmission medium. It has a low to medium capacity, low initial investment particularly in medium capacity, short repair time and service interaction, and short implementation time.
  • Fiber Optic Cable.
A dielectric waveguide used for the propagation of electromagnetic energy and optical frequencies. It also utilizes optical waveguides and light sources to propagate signals. It has high capacity, high initial investment, vulnerable to route damage and long service interruption.
  • Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT).
A terminal used in individual corporation communications. It consists of one master earth station (MAS) and numerous two-way satellite terminals. Its advantages are easy deployment in remote areas and low initial investment.

What is Synchronization?

  • is a must for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) Networking Digital cross-connects Ring operation or Linear Synchronous tributaries.

CONCEPTS OF MICROWAVE PLANNING

  • Recieve Signal level
  • Recieve sensitivity
  • Antenna Gain
  • Transmit power
  • Effective Isotropic Radiated Power
  • System Operating Margin
  • Multipath interference
  • Signal - to - Noise Ratio

We are taught but the EIC the equipment that can be found in the cell site that was being mentioned in the transmission medium. He also emphasizes how to compute the number of bits allowable for a certain microwave that will depend on the diversity reception.

And finally, the Evolution of Ethernet in the Communication Technology where they are now using the Packet Switching and Codes. It also discusses the Open System Interconnections (OSI) Model in relation to the latest innovation of transmission.

OSI Model

  1. Physical - Bits
  2. Data - Mac Address|Physical address (Frames)
  3. Network - Packets | IP address
  4. Transport - Segment | Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) and the Quality of Service (QoS)
  5. Session - Creating the session
  6. Presentation - how the data is presented that would include the process of encapsulation and encryption.
  7. Application - the Software.

This is just a summary of the knowledge from the EIC in the SMART TECHNOLOGIES

Thank you SMART for another milestone of the latest innovation in the emergence of technology in our society today specifically in the Philippines.
