#ulogs: My First Lecture on Development: We all have a role to Play – An 11 minute read

in #ulogs6 years ago

In response to the 12 minutes long message about the development journey of http://steemgigs.org (See here)with handle @steemgigs and category #steemgigs and #steemgig as reported by @surpassinggoogle, I was challenged to review my archives to see whether I consciously build upon or make a systematic update of my visions/development plans. Then I discovered this public lecture dated September 27, 2012 and presented by me @uyobong on the title: “THE ROLE OF CORPS MEMBERS IN NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT HISTORY THROUGH MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS FACILITATION”

IMG-20121018-00162.jpg

The lecture was delivered during one of our Community Development Service (CDS) meeting as a serving corps member in Oyo East L.G.A. of Oyo State. In my capacity as the then Secretary of the Project CDS group and a s a Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) facilitator, I was availed the opportunity to speak on development into the heads of my fellow compatriots.

My choice of the topic was deliberate as I was not comfortable with the continuous “blame” of government by the youths over every minute anomaly in the society and the economy. These set of persons need a different psyche on how we can contribute our seeming little efforts to societal, National and International development at large. An excerpt of the lecture goes thus:

Countries that invest in knowledge creation and adaptation as well as knowledge dissemination tend to become successful in solving their own development problems. Moreover, most human capital is built up through education or training that increases a person’s ability to produce more or more valuable goods and services and thus earn a higher income.

Amidst this consciousness, the Nigerian education sector remains undeveloped and non-resourceful. Educational policies, personnel and material resources management have their own unpleasant stories. The youths themselves fail to motivate themselves towards achieving success out of the very challenging learning conditions which they pass through.

To further worsen the scenario, we all see development as the sole responsibilities of public office holders thereby neglecting the very root “Personal Development” which transcends to family, community, local government, state and national development at large.

From the above is very glaring that we most at times neglect to see ourselves as key players to national development. If one may ask, Who is the government? We are because we run democracy (though theoretically). Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. It therefore becomes our responsibility on how our economy grow sand what it eventually become. We are the government and we must not sit at with a lazy posture.

I know we all cannot occupy the Executive, Judicial and Legislative seats, but in our little corners, we are the Executives (CEO), attorneys and legislators. If you are yet to become one or all of the above then you need to read this piece on innovation. All Innovators are leaders and we all have innovative seeds in us.

The Way Forward

However, there is hope for Nigeria’s development in the education sector with the ever consciousness and sensitivity of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which identifies the educational sector as a sector of the Nigerian economy with an ever increasing need for more hands, thus, mandates all corps members (who happen to be vibrant and knowledgeable tertiary institution graduates) to serve in schools throughout the federation. It is in the light of this realization that corps members are hereby charged to live up to the expectation of the NYSC towards developing our great nation Nigeria in the course of responding to the clarion call and rendering our pledged selfless services to humanity.

Those were my words of hope and a charge to responsibility for all corps members (then), and now to all youths and everyone reading this post. Let us rise to our feet and volunteer to take risk, be ready to serve, sacrifice, and be real.

The Millennium Development Goals Volunteering/facilitation therefore provides a platform to educate the people far beyond the educational specializations of the corps members and beyond the scope of our knowledge impartation defined in our places of primary assignments. This makes it inevitable to join this trend of “development stakeholders” in our societies.

It was MDGs then, now, we are running towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with an actualization timeline being 2035. Rise up and join the trend. There is something we all can do to support the development of our community, state, nation and the international community at large. When we all avail ourselves the responsibility of become a development agent in our little way, the following benefits will be accrued to us:

  • Becoming a key player in Nigeria’s, the World’s and the Blockchain’s development history just like many steemit witnesses have done. Their names are written in the sands of time and as long as the blockchain remains, posterity will not forget their labours and sacrifice.
  • Becoming a key player for the creation of success stories of the soon emerging Nigerian leaders and world leaders from the blockchain.

Achieving this is not without attendant benefits. Some are outlined as follows:

  1. You need to be a development thinker
  2. Design your development plan to start with you and your immediate environment.
  3. Strategize your development activities and strides.
  4. Begin your awareness creation exercise
  5. Be ready to train people to work with you.
  6. Be ready to collaborate.

Following those simple steps makes you a stakeholder in National and World development.

My Lessons as it concerns the systematic development of Steemgigs

The Power of Team Work

No unique success has been sustainably achieved while working alone. God created man for inter-dependence and collaboration. We were not called to be selfish, rather, to cooperate with others to maximize our potentials. Steemgigs from my research is a result of team work. @surpassinggoogle understood this that is why he makes waves within the system with outstanding successes as experiences by @steemgigs @teardrops @ulogs @steem-untalented. I also discovered the great work done by the steemgigs team @ @ @ who re-align their efforts and strength to the visions as presented by @surpassinggoogle, hence, the teeming success.

I also see a great deal of work made by @futurethinker in the development of @promo-mentors with the sole aim of raising great steemians with high-valued posts. The collaboration with @curie curators @ is a wonderful landmark which will always put steemit at the forefront of success in the blockchain. Space will fail me to sompletely exhaust the list of communities who do great deals of collaboration and have achieved great successes. Some include @air-clinic @stach @stach.pay Steemchurch @sc-n @sndbox @sndbox-alpha @reachout @minnowsupport @steemitschool, etc.

Indeed, steemit today which provides a platform for tangible earnings for many would not have been this successful without collaboration of nurtured minds and development thinkers who came together and ”agreed” to make STEEM a mode of exchange. That is the first strength of collaboration - agreement. Even with our diversities in language, upbringing and exposures, each time our disagreement tends toward a compromise (in this case, positive), then we head towards development.

Development is not a one man’s affair, it is a result of tiny contributions from many amounting to a flood of help, blessings and solutions.

Tiny Systematic Efforts amounting to a Force

It is rather unfortunate, the crop of young people today who refuse to be and cannot be patient to move through the progress ladder. They wish to start from the first step then get a boost to the peak in a second. Such do not understand the power of systematic movement.

cooperation2.png

When we talk about systematic movement, it Is conscious sequential movement where the lots of today forms a bedrock/foundation for tomorrow’s work. These were the testimonies of @surpassinggoogle about http://steemgigs.com See excerpts here:

Beyond that though, SteemGigs is part of an entire curriculum. Being part of a curriculum, it doesn't just happen; "it has to play itself out".

Another thing is @steemgigs has history!!! I am behind @steemgigs and i have been here since the earlier days of steemit and steem and i have experienced and been part of its evolution e.g i was here to experience the "several forks" etc that occurred, each of which brought about further evolution for steem. I was here when steem was some 7 cents etc

Development needs time, space and patience. Tiny efforts are not insignificant, rather, they are the fastest path to the peak. Every step of the ladder is as important in the growth and development process as the development itself.

It is sad that our today’s society is producing “acclaimed” leaders who rise to the ranks without passing through the huddles of service and following. They often boast “leadership is in our veins and bloodlines” even when they never offer to serve. But in reality, leadership is service. I will always eulogize @surpassinggoogle for his service roles. When I look at my reputation and his willingness to carefully look into the details of my post and give remarkable responses and resteem, I get encouraged to do more.

In one of my previous posts, I captured that a man who never served is not fit for innovation.

"Many people have a view of innovation as a "big deal", that is why many will never innovate. No! Innovation is simple. It is real, it's not for superhumans, you too can innovate."

The greatest men of all times are men who invested their lives in serving others. Every time we serve; our hearts developed more empathy for humanity and we end up feeling the pains of the victims. Service is the greatest exposure of all time and of course affords great experiences.

Without the readiness to serve, we can in no wise claim to be innovative because service sparks innovation and innovation seeks to solve a problem. When a problem is finally solved, Lo! We contributed to development. You see how simple it is?

Let us all rise up and put all our expertise to play. Let us put our skilling together and form a formidable movement for development.

Development starts with me. Development starts with you. Development starts with us!

Keeping a log of your tiny efforts

The difference between successful people and the unsuccessful ones is in the amount of records kept.
