The Greens, OIPA and MINEPDED train the Chomba Community Forest Management Committee in Tree Planting and Monitoring

Organized by the International Organization for Animal Protection (OIPA) Cameroon, The Greens and the Regional Delegation of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINPED) partnered with OIPA to train the Chomba Community Forest Management Committee and people of Chomba as well as the Earth Rangers of the SASH Program and Students of the University of Bamenda in Community Foresty, Water Catchment Protection and Tree Planting and Monitoring as part of OIPA-Cameroon’s Chomba Community Forest Conservation Project.
Holding at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Chomba on the 09th of August 2018 at 11:00AM and attended by more than 30 persons, the trainings started with a one hour presentation on the importance of trees, and why and how to protect a forest by the Regional Chief of Conservation and Monitoring of the MINEPDED.

His presentations were closely followed by a one presentation on Community Forestry and Water Catchment Protection which was presented by Ngalim Franklin, Founder/Executive Director of The Greens.

This was followed by a discussion session during which participants of the training asked questions and proposed ideas to better fortify the conservation of the Chomba Community Forest.This was followed by a discussion session during which participants of the training asked questions and proposed ideas to better fortify the conservation of the Chomba Community Forest.

At the end of the training, participants affirmed the importance of forest conservation and clearly stated that if they conserved the Chomba Community Forest, they will benefit from ecosystem services such as;

  • Increase in the quantity and quality of water
  • Increase in floral and fauna biodiversity
  • Increase in agricultural productivity
  • Increase in traditional medicine
  • Increase in tourism and research in Chomba
  • Their traditional shrine which is found at the entrance of the forest and their culture and tradition become more secured
  • Increase in forest friendly businesses such as apiculture

They pledged to conserve the Chomba Community Forest and be at the forefront of the conservation of their natural resources.
