Google announced that it will close the URL shortening service, goo.gl. They mentioned new and anonymous users could no longer create links using goo.gl service as of April 13th.

However, older users can still use this service until one year ahead. After that, Google will close this service completely.

According to The Verge report, Firebase Software Engineer Michael Hermanto said that Google introduced the URL shortening service in 2009. Since then, people's way of sharing information on the internet has changed and URL shortening services are becoming increasingly popular.

Hermanto said, Google wants to replace this service with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which allows users to access specific locations on iOS, Android or internet applications.

Old users will still be able to shorten URLs and move data from the goo.gl console until March 30, 2019. After that, the shortened links will still continue to direct users to the original destination. However, the link will not be moved to the new Firebase console.
