MYTH: Your Blood Group Dictates Your Optimal Diet

In response to my previous post about Why Did Virat Kohli Go Vegan?, I was wondering about the responses pointing the relationship of a diet with their Blood Group.

It's true that several authors have propagated various diet forms associating them with a particular Blood type from the ABO Blood Group system. The most popular among these is the naturopath Dr.. Peter J. D'adamo, the author of "Eat Right 4 Your Type" book.

In this context, I'd like to assert that all these Blood Type diets are a myth and are a fad diet to which you shouldn't subscribe to.

Why consider ABO blood groups!


These diet system prescribes certain diet to a certain blood group. E.g. Blood Group-A should eat a vegan diet and Blood Group-O should consume more animal protein.

Seems like you can't eat anything right before you get your blood group checked up!

Although ABO and Rh are the two most popular blood type classification systems, there are several other blood group systems too like Kell, Kidd, Duffy, MNS, Lewis etc. In fact, International Society for Blood Transfusion has identified 33 types of Blood Group systems in humans.

So why consider only ABO system to choose your diet, if you really think Blood Group is connected with your diet?

Ancestral stories about the evolution are a lie


Ancestral stories about the evolution of Blood Groups in humans are just that - STORIES!

Blood Group classification is a recent science and there is no way that you can ascertain the Blood Group of Lord Mahavira, Jesus Christ or Gautam Buddha. Nothing is written about Blood Group of Jesus in Bible or any other scripture.

Assumption that "O" was the ancestral blood group ...of hunter-gatherer era, so diet of people from this blood group should resemble them and constitute of high animal protein is also just that - an assumption. Similarly, believing the evolution of "B" Group from nomadic tribes or "A" group from agrarian society is just that - belief

And if you don't want to agree with me and still like to believe these diet advocates; let me throw some more light on it. According to this study, phylogentic networks of ABO alleles show that it wasn't the "O" gene, but "A" gene was the first to evolve. So going by these diet advocates, everyone should follow a vegan diet as this can prove that the earliest human species was vegan too!

Ain't animals healthy?


What do you think animals should be eating for a healthy life? Even farm animals follow a plant-based diet naturally. But did you know that blood of farm animals is classified into many more groups like D, K, M, P, Q, S, Z? So should they all too follow a different diet for a healthy living?

I hope you are getting the drift now.

What does Science indicate?

To date, there is no scientific evidence about the benefits of these diets and no clinical evidence that it improves health.

On the contrary, data collected proves otherwise. Check:
Blood type diets lack supporting evidence: a systematic review.

WebMD quotes Dr. Melinda Ratini:

One study found that adults eating the type A diet showed improved health markers, but this occurred in everyone, not just those with type A blood type. In 2013, a major review concluded that no evidence exists to support benefits of blood type diets.

Everyone can go vegan


I know we all get confused with proponents of so many diets in existence today. But this makes it even more necessary for us to dig deeper and do the fact-searching to understand what's actually right and good for us. Although Virat Kohli embraced vegan diet, he too was never untouched with the influence of these popular blood-type diets. He also thought and planned his balanced diet according to his blood group and body type. He confessed this in an interview some time back.

So I would request you to not to fall for what some popular authors promote. Do your own research and find the truth. Actually, it's an established fact now that everyone can and should go vegan.
