I recommend the Museo de Oro in San Jose - it's truly amazing. Full of ancient gold artifacts and info about the ancient tribes (some still exist, like the Bribri an Boruca). And you can do a quick tour of the Teatro Nacional before or after, they're pretty much right next to each other ;)
