My Thoughts On Voice

in #voice5 years ago (edited)

[Edit: @zanoni brought to my attention that Larrimer had said that VOICE tokens can be bought and sold, only there will be no ICO. Thank you @zanoni!]

Above is Brendan Blumer, CEO of BlockOne announcing Voice, the "Steemit killer", among other things. The part that concerns Voice begins at 18:20.

I liked the whole presentation. This is bullish for the entire blockchain-based social media space. BlockOne CEO Brendan Blumer and CTO Dan Larrimer spent a lot of time explaining what's wrong with centralized, corporate-owned social media. That is a great thing because the vast majority of people are completely in the dark as to what the problems are and how there is nothing unsolvable about them. If this part of the message reaches a large number of people, then there is a chance that the world can change for the better. The user base of DApps on Steem, EOS and the rest is tiny. Even if a couple of zeros were added to the total, it would still be small.

I'm in Tampere right now. Today I visited the go club, met with old buddies and we discussions about blockchain tech including things like smart contracts, transparency, traceability of information, control over and monetization of user-generated data on social media. The ideas I was talking about were received much better than a couple of years ago. The idea that was met with some scepticism was the value of user generated data. The guy was debating this with had to look up the market cap of Facebook before he believed it was in the neighbourhood of half a trillion, which implied the average account being worth hundreds of dollars. When I suspected that if I had been able to monetize all of my data-generating online activities during the 27 years I've been online, that would probably amounted to the value of a good new car, that was met with scepticism. But just look at my Steem account. I've earned practically all of my tokens in the last two years. Even though the price fell by 95 percent last year, there is still four figures of dollar value left. I was also happy to be able to break down how smart contracts worked and what they were useful for in a way that satisfied my conversation partners. The use of blockchains as a transparency enhanging technology in government was also talked about. There is a much more positive vibe about these things than a couple of years ago.

Back to Voice. Monetizing attention on Voice wasn't talked about. It wasn't mentioned that on EOS apps, all transactions cost a little bit of RAM that the users or apps have to pay for. On Steem, the cost of transactions is covered by witness rewards and the price of Resource Credits embedded in the price of Steem Power as the two are not yet separated, and no user or app has to pay for each and every transaction directly. Voice tokens cannot be bought or sold. They can be earned by using the app and spent on getting attention on the platform. On Voice, all accounts belong to a real human whose identity is verified. No bots and no anonymous trolling. Everything is public and stored on chain. The emphasis was on effort spent to prevent abuse and manipulation. Larrimer mentioned that use cases for the token other than buying attention will be introduced later.

I might give Voice a spin to just get a feel of how it works. Also, Voice might prove a good platform to talk about Steem and fight the FUD in the wider crypto community. The claim that bots have killed Steem is nonsense. Even if the Steemit and other blogging DApps of Steem haven't been successful at blogging platforms (compared to what?), Steem itself can easily be used for delivering any type of content. Steem is also cheap and fast to use and easy to develop on.

I wish Voice success. EOS is a high market cap coin and BlockOne is a well-funded company. Mainstream social media is the real competition and any positive results achieved by EOS in this market only help bring about a change in the dystopian reality of mainstream social media. If Voice is successful at garnering a lot of attention and onboarding a lot of new users from outside the existing crypto community, that means more people will paying attention to the flaws of centralized social media and internet value capturing and distribution in general. That will be bullish for Steem, too.

Sort:

I think they were a little premature with this announcement and launch. From what I hear they aren't even ready yet and maybe something has made them panic and push the button too early.

I won't be suprised since they seem so disorganized.

Voice tokens can be bought and sold. 😉
