Tips on How To Build Confidence in Your Children...
As adults, one thing some of us have always battled with is our confidence. We know we are smart, intelligent and all of that, but then, we are still plagued with a lot of self doubt and uncertainties. We're sure you wouldn't want your child to experience any of these, and that is why you must build your child's confidence, right from the onset.
Children go through a lot; from bullies, to failures in school to self awareness and all of that, so it's important to equip them with enough confidence to not only survive, but thrive. How can you achieve this?
Show love.
Most parents love their kids, but only few truly show this love. We've seen parents who feel that if they show children too much love, they'll get spoilt. This isn't true. Showing love will enable your kids feel free with you and have this confidence that you've got their back anytime and everytime.
Encourage.
No matter how super brilliant your kids are, they will make mistakes at some point. This is where you need to encourage them. A confident child needs a positive and realistic perception of his or her abilities, because self confidence stems from a sense of competence. So when they do well, praise them and then still encourage them when they fall short.
Comparison?
Please don't do this! Comparing your children will continually make them feel that other kids are better than them. This will dampen their confidence and infuse self doubt in them.
Help them set goals.
Your child came 5th in school? Instead of shouting or screaming, sit with the child, encourage her and then help her set realistic goals. You both could talk about her coming third next term and then begin to work towards it. Your child will have more confidence when she knows she's not alone in this journey.
Teach resilience.
Let your child know it's okay to make mistakes. So teach your child how to push further and be resilient in the face of difficulties.
"Don't run into your shell."
Teach this to your child, whatever they're going through, let them know they can talk to you and you wouldn't be judgmental.
Be positive.
There's a chance your child has already beaten herself up over a mistake. Don't worsen it, teach her the power of positive thinking and make her practice it.
