Bringing Graphene Water Filtration To The Masses

in #water5 years ago

Researchers continue to explore the potential applications for graphene, with the hope of soon bringing it to the masses to help provide clean drinking water.

The strength and flexibility of graphene allows it to be useful in a variety of circumstances. It could be used to make flexible and transparent displays, to provide “smart clothing,” to make better speakers, clean seawater, improve batteries, and plenty more.

As interest for graphene products has grown in recent years, the cost of production has continued to decline. It's increasingly becoming more affordable which helps to broaden the potential applications.

In the UK, one water filter manufacturer known as LifeSaver, has partnered with the National Graphene Institute to try and commercialize graphene-based water filters by eventually producing a portable graphene-based water filter.

They hope to create a water filter that is going to be able to potentially remove pesticides, a variety of chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, or even nuclear radiation.

The project that they're embarking on which is seeking to create that product is going to take place at the University of Manchester which is currently considered to be one of the leaders for graphene membrane development.

“The graphene filter is like a mesh or sieve with holes so small that salt molecules cannot pass through,” - Prof Nair, professor of materials physics from Manchester University

Researchers are hopeful that graphene might potentially provide the ultimate water filter which might be able to clean water at any source, quickly turning it into safe drinking water regardless of the contaminants. Soon, they hope that these graphene-based walter filter bottles are going to be available for mass production and that could drastically transform the clean water market, helping to bring clean water to many who need it.

I get in the pattern of assuming we have thought of the best way of doing things. Then I am pleasantly surprised at discovering there are smarter people than me still discovering and innovating and improving.

Affordable cleaner water is just awesome for the people on this rock.
