So many amazing pictures. I am not familiar with Drakensburg Mountains. Those are unbelievable, such majesty! What were those birds? Were you able to get very close to the Impalas? Facinating! Love the chalet, the front door was really beautiful. Great post @lizelle, sorry for so many questions ;)
The Drakensberg is a UNESCO world heritage Site, absolutely stunning. Besides the natural beauty there's rock paintings from the San people who lived there for 4 millennia. Higher up in the mountains the water is so pure one can drink it, crystal clear and icy cold!
The birds were Ibis, we stayed on the path so the buck carried on grazing, they must be used to hikers, I do think they'd be startled if we tried to get too close. We saw a bigger herd on our way back but they stood in the shade so could not get a clear photo of them. Our first two days were spent in a heat wave but from the third day it changed to icy cold, typical Drakensberg night time temperature so we had a fire going every night thereafter. Will do a follow up of our trip next week.
You would absolutely love it there, accommodation options range from super comfy to rugged backpacking for hikers or mountaineers where they overnight in caves or mountain huts, so it caters for everyone, unfit, us oldies;) to the super fit! Our chalet had all the mod cons, it's like a home away from home, just better. Friends joined us, we braaied (BBQ), had a pancake supper, played lots of Rummikub at night with lots of laughter, was such fun!
oh, this sounds wonderful!!!! I know we would love it, what a great get-away! You certainly deserved it @lizelle :) Love nature and all it brings, even a cold weather snap. Makes me think we need to get out in our van and travel again. Look forward to more pics! Thanks for sharing, I love hearing all about it
