Wednesday Walk The Old Battery. Built by The Knights Of St John

IMG_5680.JPG

To start this Wednesday walk, I walk along a tree-lined walkway with Marsalforn behind me. Marsalforn is the largest seaside village on the island and is to the north of the island.

I photographed where I came from (the left of the picture) after arriving, as it is not easy to photograph on the approach being so low down. This area is a popular tourist area and is mainly restaurants.

The building in front is where I am going to end the walk.

The front approach to the building via a wide unfinished dirt road. The building has several names but in English, it is often called Xwejni Battery and is midway between Marsalforn & Xwejni Bay in Gozo.

The rocky area to the right of the building is popular for bathers but is becoming difficult to negotiate as the next pictures show. A legal dispute prevents the refurbishment of the area.

A ladder to sea level for bathers.

Negotiate a trench to get to the ladder.

Access to the ladder is this way. Not an easy access to go swimming.

The building is an old battery built by the Knights of St John in the early 18th century it is now in a very dilapidated condition. The building was modified when turned into a discothèque in the 70's, by changing the original ramp at the front, to stairs and the addition of the structure seen at the top of the picture on the gun plateau. The windows are just visible in the picture (top left.)
Due to legal disputes between the government and the company who leased the building from them, it has been left to deteriorate despite offers being made to renovate the building to its former glory by NGO's.

A view toward the front of the building, the circular design is for the original guns to be able to fire in all directions. Note the salt pans below the walls as this old gun battery is not far from the salt pans I walked along recently. https://steemit.com/wednesdaywalk/@honeycup-waters/wednesday-walk-along-the-salt-pans

The ravages of time and weather are clear to be seen. Who knows how long the legal issues will continue. However, it has stood for nigh on 300 years, it will probably stay put a little longer.
