Weekend Freewrite: The call

Continuation from Part 2.
"I miss you."
Slowly, slowly, the door opened creaking loudly. She sucked in her breath and whispered: "You were going to oil this."
It was Don.
"Sorry, did I startle you? What's for dinner?" he picked her up and landed a peck on her dried lips.
"Made some lasagna tonight, I'll heat it up. Go ahead and wash up, it'll be done real quick."
"You're the best, I'm starving!"
They've been married for 14 years. They didn't have much back then, but the good Lord blessed them good.
She could almost remember every detail of the moment they first met. It was at the town's spring dance party. He instantly caught her eye. A most sweet natured gentleman and pleasant. He was shy and quiet, and she was a wild horse ready to have some fun.
"I miss you."
Her thoughts went back to where it was left stranded. In an instant her heart and mind felt heavy. It was a call from a man, one of whom the children fondly know as 'grandpa'.
"How are you these days?" asked the frail small voice. Her hands trembled as she clung to every strength she had to answer the call.
"Jessa, I'm dying. Stage 3 cancer. It's all over the place."
She remembered that rainy September. It was colder and moister. The flowers were droopy from all the rain, mushrooms grew like a sea of wildforest. The laundry was forever undone.
Her heart skipped a beat. She held her breath. Her eyes felt hot and all of a sudden, tears streamed down her rosy cheeks as she bit her lips, not knowing what to say.
