I understand that whaleshares is its own community but what makes it better or different compared to Steem. Or what can I gain by having both accounts Steem and Whaleshares?
Well they are different - whaleshares is sharing /rewarding in whaleshares means sharing - share to your web trusted friends, You can also post on the two chains and see which rewards you most using MASDACS.io
