Grinzing Wine District in Vienna, Austria

in #wine6 years ago

One thing that I've put on my 'do-over' list is to go back to Austria and experience more of it's incredible wine region and culture. We had a great time there don't get me wrong, I'll just make sure to slow down a bit next time!

One adventure that we went on was visiting Grinzing, a quaint little suburb outside of Vienna full of old wine taverns. The history of this place dates back to the 12th century, and the buildings look like you've just walked into a fairy tale.

When coming here, you'll want to visit a Heuriger, a wine establishment where winemakers showcase their new vintages (Heuriger literally translates to 'this year's wine'). Traditionally, winemakers would showcase the wine and the guests would bring their own food, but these days you will usually find a cold and hot menu available, typically buffet style. As a girl who is a self-proclaimed foodie I wanted to order everything on the menu, but sadly was not very hungry. But once I saw 'Lard' on the menu, it became my Moses and my stomach parted like the sea to make room. Spreadable pork fat? YES PLEASE! How I am not 400lbs is beyond me.

Careful when planning a trip here though. The Heuriger are sometimes only open in certain seasons, but there are some that are year round as well. Even these ones will have tricky hours though, so just make sure you do your research beforehand or you may find yourself just wandering around for the day. Not an awful alternative, but it won't include wine :(

We loved our time here and I'm already making a game plan to get better-acquainted with Austria next time <3

Thanks for reading <3

Tub Cat is jealous that you were able to experience such a beautiful place, however does not think he would enjoy spreadable pork fat. Tub Cat thinks that sounds very disturbing indeed. The wine, however, looks amazing and a Cat in a Tub could spend a lot of time on that wine selection.

I love how you describe lard as 'spreadable pork fat'. I've never thought of looking at it this way haha!
