Farm house table

in #woodwork6 years ago (edited)

In my introduction, I mentioned I’m a carpenter and have a wood shop here in the mountains of Georgia.

I’d like to share with you a design for a farm house table I built for a customer.

He wanted a table large enough to fit his family and guests. This one was 90” long and had benches to match.

All the wood was purchased at Home Depot and cost around $200.

Now I have access to a variety of tools from my shop, but this project can also be done without a large professional wood shop.

The minimum tools needed are:
Hand planer or jointer.
Large bar clamps.
Screw gun / drill.
Table saw or circular saw.
Miter saw, chop saw, or circular saw.
Orbital sander.
Chisel.

The top is made from 2”x10” lumber glued and I used dowels to keep it from shifting. This is where you’ll need the bar clamps. The same technique is used for the bench tops.

The frame is made with 4”x4” lumber and 2x4’s on both the table base and benches.

I added a special touch to make the edges of the top look like raw edges, like bark. Stained the table and benches with golden pecan, and clear coated everything with several layers of poly.

Here is the finished product in my customers house waiting for his guests.

Nice, look and feel, my little Granny had one about 4 foot longer than that one (wasn't as nice..) the bench seat on it was split log with legs drilled into it.
BTW you may get more hits if you change the first tag to woodworking both are valid so who knows. I'll drop it in the #post-promotion on the Woodworking on Steem Discord Channel that should push it up abit.

Thank you. It doesn’t seem I can change any tags after the post is published.

Nice job. I like this style of table, they are just so functional. I will be making one at some point for myself. I have an old oak church pew and I plan to match in with it. You got a lovely sheen on it too.

Thank you very much. It was a fun project. Took about 2 weeks with all the dry time. You’ll have fun making one, it’s satiafying.
