The Writers Block-Writers Workout 1.5

At the writers block we have been busy in the workshops. Everyone is learning new skills and working hard to improve their writing and editing.

After only doing a few workshops I have learned a lot. The things that we have went over won’t just help me write they will also help me in my schooling.

I encourage everyone to go over to @TheWritersBlock on Steemit and discord. Everyone care really learn a lot and enhance the skills they already have.

Here is my character sketch for the Writers Workout 1.5.

Melanie slams her palm hard on the clock radio on her nightstand. Not the right button.

“In other news, the suspects in yesterday's triple homicide are still at large--” Another swat, and the chirpy voice of the reporter grows silent.

Way too soon to process another tragedy.

Sitting upright in the bed, she looks beside her. Just an empty spot. Even the sheet isn’t wrinkled on that side.

Through the empty house, she drags her way to the kitchen to make breakfast. Toast, maybe some eggs. In the cabinet, one old bread wrapper and an empty pop-tart box. Cereal again. If only there were milk.

He was always the one who bought groceries.

After eating, Melanie gets dressed for another dreadful day at work. Her feet feel like bricks as she walks out the door. An oil stain and a few brittle leaves is all that meet her eyes.

“My truck!”

A quick scan of the long driveway and the road below reveals nothing but emptiness. Nothing of hers in any direction.

Going back inside, she sinks to the floor. For the first time since the incident, she breaks down.

Looking around at the house that once felt like home, Melanie lets out a scream. She finally releases the tears she’s held back for far too long.

Everything is gone. Nothing will ever be the same. And there is nothing she can do about it.

We are definitely covering some interesting ground in these workouts. I'm so glad you're able to take part. You are right--they will absolutely help you with your schoolwork, and with college assignments. Actually, the things you learn will benefit you for the rest of your life, even in your career. :-) This is a strong piece of writing, especially for being one of your first short fiction pieces. The sky's the limit!

For folks not in the workout with us, the prompt was: "Your character walks outside to realize their vehicle has been stolen." If you're not part of The Writers' Block already, click the animated logo above and join the workshops with us!
