Down on his luck

A dude from our island sells snack for a living at the train station. He lost everything in the hurricane that devastated our island of Dominica last year. He said he is getting help from the red Cross but I can see a kind of sadness there. His house was uninsured. Which pretty much left him floundering in the wind. Without the red Cross help he'd be out of options.

So this is life. We are at the mercy of the elements especially if we are poor. Doesn't matter what country you live in. When disaster hits the rich will always fare better. Katrina is not far from memory. Maria is our Katrina. She brought our beautiful island to its knees with 90% destruction. My parents house more or less was spared with only windows and doors destroyed. Others like this guy wasn't so lucky.

He looks lost like a ship without a captain. I never knew him back home but he worked with my brother in the hospital. Now he is selling snacks on the streets in America to survive. No way that can buy him another house. Meanwhile another hurricane season is almost here. No way the island is prepared for that. When nature is furious there's not much we can do but hope for the best and prepare for the worst. At least snack guy is not worrying about losing another house. And he has sweets to hustle in Brooklyn.
