The international community has approved of billions of dollars in aid to be given to Afghanistan over the years.

It's a nation that's been described as being addicted to foreign aid and various reports have suggested that little has been accomplished with the funds.

A recent U.S. watchdog agency has suggested that billions of dollars given to the country might have been a complete waste, which they've attributed to corruption and lax oversight, among other concerns that they see as fueling the problem.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Special Inspector-General for 'Afghanistan Reconstruction', it's suspected that the money has gone to various projects which have failed to impress.

They allege that corrupt officials who had been tasked with paying workers to complete these various projects (build clinics, schools etc) had created 'ghost workers' in order to have the money essentially funneled to themselves.

Not only are taxpayers in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere, funding a multi-trillion dollar battle in Afghanistan in this unreasonable ongoing war on terror, but they are also wasting significant additional resources on trying to rebuild the area at the same time.

Their efforts however, are riddled with allegations of failure and corruption. Should we really be surprised? It's what government does best.

Where Is The Money Going?

The special inspector-general has suggested that no one is really being held accountable over the misuse of the funds. And we have heard the same story before, such as a lack of responsibility when it comes to crimes committed during the war conflict as well.

It's reported that these funds are deposited into Western trust funds for international aid, these funds are managed by the United Nations, the World Bank, and NATO.

The recent watchdog report suggested that there is a troubling lack of oversight and mismanagement in regards to 2 specific Western trust funds that are being run by the World Bank and the United Nations.

It's alleged that hundreds of millions of dollars from Canada alone has been sent to these trust specific funds.

The U.S. happens to be the largest donor to those funds, sending billions as well. Now, it's alleged that the Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada has launched an internal review to investigate these claims of mismanaged funds.

The U.S. and its partners have spent billions on trying to rebuild and stabilize Afghanistan, coupled with bombing the country and staying engaged in an ongoing war that's lasted almost 2 decades at the same time. The plan hasn't made much sense from the beginning and I am not surprised that they've still failed to achieve their intended goals. It's time they stop wasting other people's money on bad ideas.
