THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW OR A TICKLING BOMB

There are statements we hear when we were small that were supposed to guide us to the truth but they have eventually led us astray as a youth. I can remember when we were small, our teachers used to sing to us that we are the future leaders but this is becoming challenging with this recent generation. I have watched how things are and my conclusion is that – youths may actually be the destroyer of the future they are supposed to lead.

There was election this Saturday in Nigeria and I have a lot to say about this in connection with this article. Youths instigated the government to adjust the constitution so they can run and the government agreed. Many youths came out to occupy the federal and state arm of government, they came out with sweet manifestos and promises and we all heard. When election came, aged and adults came out to vote more than the youths. While the adults were exercising their civic duties, the youths were on social media throwing away their future to the recycled government of old politicians.

It hurts to write about this, most of the violence that happened during the election were perpetrated by youths. The hand they were supposed to use to carry farm tools, they used to carry guns to destabilize people that came out to vote. A youth will rather use his voting card to collect money from a politician that to use it to vote for the right one. Are these truly the leaders of the tomorrow we have been waiting for? I want to ask you, will you rather someone richer buy your future or secure it for you? The ball is in your court.

I heard a degrading story recently and it made me cry for our future. The desperation of our youths to make money at all cost is shameful. There is a trend that is going on now and it is the use of ladies’ pants for money rituals. It has spread like a virus in the society. We have heard more than 20 cases since it started, ladies have been warned not to spread their undies outside yet so many stories are still coming out. There was a case of robbers invading a female hostel to rob them of their undies, there was this case of a guy stealing his girlfriend’s panties for rituals. The worst case was when some girls were stopped and they didn’t put on undies, the robbers gave them new ones to put on before going away it. This may be new to people outside of the country but it is truly happening around us.

Greed and impatience are living in the hearts of the youths. They are like time bombs waiting to detonate and who can stop this? What can the just youths do to correct the unjust ones? These are questions we need to ask ourselves, maybe the answers can make us re-adjust and do the right thing. We have disobeyed culture and traditions because we want to flaunt a rich lifestyle that we cannot afford. So many youths are perishing because they don’t care about their health, they only prefer social standards set by fellow youths. Drugs abuse have become our brother and narcotics, our sister. This is why we don’t live long like our ancestors.

If we don’t correct the ill in the society caused by youths, they will eventually destroy the foundation of our heroes past. Together, we can be employer of labor instead of waiting for menial jobs that will drain our intelligence. An idle hand is the devil’s workshop, when we show others we can be hardworking, they won’t bring illegal activities to your front. We don’t need internet fraud, prostitution, social vices and drug abuse to be youths. We are truly leaders and I am already working to be one, are you?
