Chronicles of the afterlife - A walk with Grim

Tod Wayne. Just another face in the crowd, distinguishable by nothing more than his retrieving hairline and a tiny birthmark behind his left ear. Although he has been considered ordinary his entire life one simple thing just made him become really special in the eyes of his friends and family. He died. A fatal heart attack out of blur took him by surprise. One moment he was eating some leftover food and watching a boring documentary alone in his small flat and the next one a series of painful seizures took his breath away and he was gone. But where to?

The last thing Tod saw was his flat screen TV and everything went dark, his body functions stopped and he didn’t even feel his head hit the floor. His mind and soul however moved on with their existence. He felt like he was waking up in a pitch black room, but the image slowly came into focus. The place he was at looked like a dungeon of some sort and poor Tod was struggling to figure out how he got there and how the pain he felt a second ago mysteriously vanished.
“Mortal”, a deep terrifying voice spoke behind him, “are you conscious yet?”
“Where, where am I?”
“It’s not where mortal it’s what and the answer is dead”, saying that the shadowy figure came into Tod’s line of sight.
Tod went speechless for a minute. His thoughts were flying everywhere trying to comprehend the fact that he’s gone from Earth. He didn’t really enjoy his life too much so it wasn’t long before he made peace with it and continued to talk to the entity in front of him “Who are you? What happens now?”
“I’m what you know as the Grim Reaper, a mixture of what I really am and what you imagine I should be and what happens next is not certain yet, but the answer will reveal itself after a while.”
“Honestly I am completely confused. Can you give me any clearer answers than that?”
Grim shrugged his shoulders visibly annoyed and said: “What I just told you is really simple to understand it’s just that your weak human minds aren’t able to figure it out just yet. Walk with me and you will give yourself the answers you are seeking for”.
“Give myself the answer? Well if I knew it I wouldn’t ask you”, Tod answered even more baffled than before and just stood in place staring blankly at Grim.
“Start walking”, the Reaper raised his voice and it echoed so loud that Mr. Wayne almost jumped forward. He would be crazy not to listen to this creature so he obediently started following it like a puppy.
“Listen to me and listen carefully, I hate repeating myself. I am quite the opposite of what you humans think, I don’t come down to Earth with a scythe to reap the souls of sinners or whatever, I only exist to help you understand what comes next.”
“So the life I had before it’s not important anymore is it?”
“Yes and no. You’re not going to get reincarnated as an animal or something like that, no, but what you’ve become so far will be important for the beginning of your afterlife.”
“And my friends and family what happens to them? Will I ever see them again?”
“That depends entirely up to you, your desires and the path you pave yourself. You see everything that happens from now on is inside your head, but it is very real.”
“That doesn’t make much sense. What about heaven, hell and the purgatory, do they exist?”
“In a way they do. Based on how you act and what you think about yourself you can experience both excruciating pain or joy like you’ve never felt before.”
“I think I am starting to see the wider picture, but some things are still unclear to me. How long does this afterlife last?”
“Don’t worry about the length of it for now. The life you’ve had before, think of it as being born. From being in the womb as nothing more than an embryo to developing body parts, but in this case you were developing your mind and spirit.”
“That I understand now. And you? Are there more of your kind, or does time run so slow here so you have the time to greet every person that dies?”
“I am the only one, but combined with one’s mind and expectations everyone meets a version of me when they die.”
As soon as Grim finished his sentence a door appeared out of nowhere in front of them. The Reaper reached for the handle and opened them wide. A bright yellow light illuminated them.
“What is this”, asked Tod.
“This means you are ready to move on”, an answer came. Grim’s ice cold hand grabbed his shoulder and pushed him into a new journey, a journey of his afterlife.
