TV and Movie Adaptations of Bestselling Books

in #writing6 years ago

THROUGHOUT the years, many bestselling books were adapted on television and film. Their success proves to be unstoppable because it's not only limited to papers and bookstores but it can also conquer households through TV shows and even make people buy cinema tickets. Movie producers love to make adaptations of these hit books because in a way, it's already considered "pre-sold" because of its huge fanbase. The loyal readers of theses books would most likely watch the adaptation because they're either curious of the outcome or they simply want to support it. Either way, it's good for business.

While some didn't get much attention, most adaptations experienced a massive success. For example, TV adaptations like The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars and Game of Thrones among others enjoyed a massive success among its audience. And when we talk about film adaptations, the brilliant works of authors like Nicholas Sparks, JK Rowlings, Stephen King, John Green and EL James to name a few have also created blockbuster hits.

As a reader, you would naturally feel proud and happy for your favorite author's achievement. And to see your favorite novels on TV or bigscreen is an entirely different experience. You get to see the scenes unfold and witness the characters' struggles and success outside of your imagination. But not all readers are happy about adaptations. They hate the fact that movie producers alter a lot of things on the story. They often make tons of changes, remove or add new characters and scenes, and sometimes, changing almost 80% of the original story. That's something that ticks them off and makes them wish that an adaptation shouldn't have happened if it would only ruin the story they've grown to love.

As a reader, I understand their sentiments. But on a businessman's perspective, they also have to make sure that the movie would fit into the taste of non-reader moviegoers. Not all have read the book and they could have a different taste compared to those who have read the novel prior to watching the movie. And let's admit it, there are some scenes on the books that are pretty hard to be done in movies or films. There are a lot of factors to consider, like financial matters. When a writer writes a novel, he can write whatever he wants because his imagination is his only limit. He can put expensive things on the novel. He can make his characters travel around the world. He can write EVERYTHING. But when you are making a film, you have to think about the expenses because there is an allocated budget for a certain project. Or maybe some scenes on the book are really hard to achieve because it would take so much time and they already have a deadline for the filming of the movie. There are a lot of factors why things were different and as long as everything was approved by the author, I guess that's completely fine.

The next time you watch an adaptation, try to remove your expectations and just enjoy the movie as it is. If you end up disappointed, that's completely okay. We have our own personal tastes. What works for you might not work for others. It's just a matter of respecting individual preferences. Let's also not forget that the filmmakers are giving their everything to give us a decent and an excellent adaptation of our beloved books.

Thank you!

Most filmmakers try to give us a decent adaptation, anyway. I dunno about the people behind that one try at Earthsea.

I find that the best adaptations are those that remain true to the original without being constrained by it. For example, the BBC's adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell was absolutely fantastic, basically perfect, and of the HP movies Prisoner of Azkaban is undoubtedly the best, at least in my opinion.
