The Lord of the rings is a good start. I would suggest reading the supplemental material: The Simarillion, the lay of Beleriand, the cottage of lost play, the lost stories.
Another good one would be Tad Marshall's Memory, thorn, and sorrow trilogy. Then David Edding's Belgariad. Then the Wheel of time. Just for fun, you could read The Dragonlance series.

It's a pretty good order, so why not? :) The Wheel of time is a story for itself, I read it twice :D
My recommendation from this books would bee Belgariad. :)
