That's what the man asked before getting stabbed in the heart over 50 times by his wife after cheating on her.
When he woke up, he wasn't on earth anymore, he was not in the land of the living... a man engulfed in a cloak of shadows slowly approached him and told him: "My name is Virgil, and I'm here to guide you through purgatory"
That's when the realization came in, he was definitely dead as any man could be but he found himself confused, since all his life he declared he was a man of science but yet there he was, at the bottom floor of purgatory where apparently people got tested before being sent into heaven.
He never believed in religion but he studied the beliefs out of curiosity and asked Virgil what he was doing on the purgatory when only people that thought of sinning where sent there, those that actually committed a sin where sent directly into the depths of hell.
Suddenly Virgil had came to the realization that there was a mistake on the side of heaven's bureaucracy, he apologized and sent the man straight into the 4th circle of hell, where he suffered being blow away by an ice storm for the rest of eternity, just like his desires had blown away everything he had in life, he suffered... he suffered a lot.

Lol, poor Dante. At least he came back to life and narrated his experience in Hell. Now we know what it's like down there. :)
