Building up to Christmas with Dusty the Demon Hunter - A Blast from the Past - Doppelgänger - Part 8

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

This is Dusty's 4th adventure.

I remember stories of Doppelgängers from when I was at school and they captured my imagination - much like the fairies and their changelings did.

I wrote this story with the more sinister aspects of the creatures in mind.

Doppelgänger

“Dusty is to be allowed to choose where she will set up her protective circle. She is allowed to go anywhere in the house, and to use any room she chooses. It must be the place where she feels safest, where she feels most comfortable,” Maura said.

Dusty understood what Maura did when she gave the instruction; she was telling Dusty that she trusted her in the house.

Dusty responded by asking if Hunter could come with her to show her where everything was.

Dusty noticed the smile that Osborn and Maura shared. It had taken a lot for Maura to trust Dusty after the theft, but she was rewarded with respect from Dusty and a hinted-at assurance when she requested Hunter’s presence as she sought out the place where she would try to defeat the Doppelgänger.

Dusty was given ‘the tour’ of the house, and it was indeed as spacious as it appeared to be from a distance.

It was also decorated with an elegant, if eclectic style, and Dusty saw many beautiful things as they went around. She finally settled downstairs in the kitchen as the room where she felt at ease the most.

The heart of the house was large, clean and had windows on three walls, so was bright and inviting. The floor was also tiled in black ceramic tiles and, therefore, easy to scrub clean. She set about thoroughly scrubbing the floor.

She opened her bag and brought out the equipment she needed for her ceremonies.

She drew a circle on the floor in salt, leaving a small gap to be filled in later.

She then drew the pentacle inside the circle with practiced expertise. The candles were set on the floor and then she had to get her body clean.

The kitchen had been chosen not just because of the ease of making the floor clean, there was also a downstairs bathroom close by.

Hunter made certain that his parents and his brothers had gone out – as they agreed – so that Dusty wouldn’t feel uncomfortable at being naked.

She did try to tell Hunter that she wasn’t self-conscious about her body, but Hunter had insisted. It was perhaps the fault of the Doppelgänger flirting with his brothers that had prompted the mild attack of jealousy.

As Dusty showered and returned to the circle, Hunter tried to contact the Doppelgänger in much the same way that Dusty had called on Hunter on occasion.

When he had a fix on its location, he told Dusty that he had found where it was hiding out, and then he went to fetch it.

Dusty was surprised at the speed with which Hunter returned, she hadn’t realised that the Doppelgänger had chosen somewhere so very close to Hunter’s home.

It had taken shelter in a disused summerhouse on the grounds of the house. It didn’t need warmth or creature comforts for the majority of the time, because it was an ethereal entity.

Hunter was approaching the house, Dusty heard him come through the door. He was talking to the Doppelgänger. His words became clearer and she could hear him just outside the kitchen door.

Dusty allowed herself to ascend up to the Astral Plane and the Doppelgänger shuddered as she became solid.

Dusty clothed herself and then went to find Hunter. She could see it from above as she moved through to the hall where Hunter and the impostor were talking.

Hunter glanced up and Dusty knew that he could sense her presence, but the fake Dusty couldn’t.

Dusty saw for the first time how exact the image was. Even she would have had a hard time telling the two apart.

There was no wonder that Hunter had been tricked. The image was exactly what she saw when she looked in a mirror.

If she parted her hair on one side or had a blemish or scar, then the difference would have been easier to notice, but Dusty couldn’t tell, not by first glance.

It would have taken expert study to notice anything different. Dusty knew that she couldn’t blame Hunter for being taken in.

Dusty saw the lust in the Doppelgänger's eyes.

She also saw that it was having some kind of effect on Hunter. His eyes had glazed over, just as they had on the first day in the snow covered field, and she became angry.

In her demonic fury, Dusty took the Unicorn rope and flung it over the Doppelgänger, just as it was leaning in to kiss Hunter.

“I don’t think so, you devious bitch!” she said.

Dusty knew that if Hunter had once been kissed by the Doppelgänger, he would have been lost to Dusty forever. He would have been enslaved, would have fallen in love never to be released, because a Doppelgänger is a species of Fae, Faerie, Fairy and cannot be easily killed.

Hunter would have lost his heart to the image and as soon as it had his heart, it would have lost interest. It would have kept him dangling, following it like a love-sick, moon-struck, doe-eyed simpleton with no self respect and no desire to do anything at all except to fulfil the wants and whims of the Doppelgänger.

In the end, the Doppelgänger would tire of its new toy and either disappear from his life, leaving a destroyed, depressed, and empty shell of a man in its wake, or it would simply instruct him to kill himself.

It depended on how perverse it was.

Because Dusty was not asleep in the conventional sense, she could vary her consciousness.

Because the Doppelgänger's essence was linked to hers, it would be forced to react in the opposite way automatically.

Dusty woke herself enough to make the Doppelgänger ‘fade’ in the real world and as soon as it became sufficiently immaterial, she yanked hard on the Unicorn rope and pulled the fake Dusty into the Astral Plane.

Sort:

Ok, i am starting to hate this Doppelgänger.

“I don’t think so, you devious bitch!” she said.

OMG i soooooo smiled when i read this bit! :D

she can wash her body just normal with Water, or she need any special thing, like a holy soap or something ?
